Are you a Principal Electrical Engineer with strong skills and experience working with distribution voltages up to 132kV? Do you have an industrial, renewable generation, or DNO background? We have an exciting role in our established Electricity Transmission & Distribution teams based at either of our central Edinburgh or Glasgow offices.

You will report to the Associate Director, providing project management and technical support on a variety of projects.

The Team

Our T&D Scotland team focuses on the management, design and supervision of electrical power projects at voltages ranging from 1kV to greater than 500kV.

The focus of the T&D Scotland team is large-scale grid infrastructure, grid connections, and private wire networks.

Examples of recent and current projects include:

  • Acting as Technical Advisor for the design and installation of various solar PV, diesel generator and battery storage mini-grids providing power to hospitals and health clinics in Africa.

  • Specification, design review, factory audit and final acceptance test witnessing of 220 and 400 kV transformers for solar PV farms in Spain.

  • Technical and Quality advisor role for 11 kV submarine cable in Scotland.

  • Diversion of power and telecom cabling for a major transport project in central Scotland.

  • System studies, load flow, fault current, harmonics etc. for a large windfarm in central Scotland.

  • Studies and grid connection applications for a variety of renewable generation projects across the UK.

The Role

As Principal Electrical Engineer, you will be involved in the design and specification of plants used in transmission and distribution networks. An awareness of emerging technologies such as heat pumps, electric vehicle charging, demand-side management, and novel network design would be an advantage.

In addition to electrical engineering responsibilities, this role will encourage business development and project management skills which will involve participating in client engagements, assisting with bids, and applying AECOM’s safety, environmental, quality and project management systems.

Training and development to become an AECOM-certified project manager will be available.

Minimum Requirements

Required/Essential Skills & Experience

  • BSc/BEng Electrical Engineering (Hons) or MEng.

  • Be working towards, or have already achieved, Chartered Engineer status.

  • Experience of working in teams.

  • Experience of Microsoft Office.

  • Customer facing skills.

  • Previous experience as a consultant would be advantageous

Preferred Qualifications

Desirable Skills & Experience

Experience of design or management in at least one of the following areas is required. Broader experience across several of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Underground cables at voltages of 11 kV and higher.

  • Overhead lines.

  • Submarine cables at voltages of 11 kV and higher.

  • Load flow and fault studies, using ETAP, DigSilent, PScad etc.

  • Earthing system studies and design using software such as CDegs.

  • Lightning protection system risk assessment.

  • Grid connection process.

  • Specification of electrical plant items, e.g. transformers, circuit breakers, diesel generator sets etc.
