POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This is a full-time position located on-site at NRL in SE Washington, DC. The NRL is the designated lead laboratory for U.S. Navy space programs. NRL has the mission to preserve and enhance a strong space technology base and to provide expert assistance in the development and acquisition of instrument space systems which support naval missions. Principle NRL functions include: understanding and clarifying mission requirements; conducting research and development activities; analyzing and testing systems to quantify their capabilities; developing operational concepts that exploit new technical capabilities; and developing, testing, and evaluating selected aerospace systems and subsystems for space flight.

  • Mission Assurance / Quality Engineer participate on a team of engineers, design technicians, and testing staff to develop spaceflight H/W. As the Quality Assurance Engineer for assigned programs, the successful candidate will help lead the spectrum of mission assurance activities required throughout the lifecycle of product development including but not limited to: supporting flight hardware development and testing activities through test witnessing and inspections, participating in formal and informal technical reviews; performing source acceptance inspections; reviewing and approving subcontractor plans, procedures and design documents; participating in Material Review Boards; eliciting root causes and corrective actions when appropriate; and providing various other quality assurance support tasks as assigned.
  • The successful candidate will also assist the Mission Assurance Manager in quality management system procedure development and supplier evaluations as required

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10 years of demonstrated experience in the aerospace industry with demonstrated experience with NASA or NRL spaceflight H/W development.
  • 10 years of demonstrated experience in the aerospace industry, with demonstrated experience in (a) space flight hardware (b) experience with NASA or NRL and (c) knowledge and demonstrated skills in the application of Y14.5, ISO 9001-1994, ISO 9000-2000, AS9100, FEMA’s, Risk Management and statistical process techniques.
  • Familiarity and experience with DoD and NASA standard for reliability, quality assurance, and system safety.
  • A strong aerospace background with direct experience performing product (hardware) related quality engineering activities.
  • The ability to support technical reviews throughout the product lifecycle from Conceptual Design through Pre-Ship Review.
  • A strong and demonstrable knowledge of requirements related to electromechanical systems; soldered assemblies, cable, crimp, and harness assemblies; dimensioning and tolerancing; measurement systems; metrology; ESD controls; non-conforming material control; identification and traceability; storage and handling; inspection systems; and fabrication of aerospace products.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and strong computer skills (MS Outlook (email), MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience managing suppliers including determining appropriate requirements to be flowed down; creating and reviewing Quality Assurance plans and procedures; completing on-site process and product inspections; participating in Material Review Boards, and completing document and data reviews prior to shipment.
  • Travel is unlikely but could occur at times during the project lifecycle.
