SAIC is seeking a Spacecraft (SmallSat) Systems Engineer to join the National Security Customer Group (NSCG) in our Chantilly, VA office.  NSCG provides specialized engineering, analysis, and operations support to a variety of US Government (USG) customers.  We support the generation after next of national security-related systems based in space, in the air, and on the ground.


The NSCG has an opening for an engineer to provide systems engineering and technical advisory services to an IC research and development (R&D) customer.  The customer is developing cutting edge technology solutions for next generation space hardware, software, and architectural solutions for the IC.  Specifically, this position provides smallsat/cubesat space and ground technology demonstration lifecycle support in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support to plan and execute spacecraft acquisition, development, integration and test (I&T), verification and validation (V&V), launch, and on-orbit demonstration operations

  • Provide technical review and assessment of spacecraft (bus and payloads) and ground system technologies, concepts, and systems

  • Provide technical support to smallsat/cubesat experimental technology demonstration planning and execution

  • Facilitate collaboration across a diverse team of commercial and non-traditional sources to include small business to identify and leverage revolutionary concepts and technologies

  • Review, monitor, and track requirements, interface control documents, and test plans

  • Develop documents and briefings to communicate program/project status; brief customer and industry as required

  • Provide acquisition support to include programmatics (budgets, schedules), contracts (SOWs, CDRLs, RFPs), and technical objectives as needed

  • Perform technical data management activities as required


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline w/10+ years relevant experience, or equivalent work experience

  • 5 years engineering project management or program office experience

  • Knowledge of spacecraft and/or ground operations, as well as government organizations involved in the space domain or space technology

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic and energetic environment with the ability to converse with highly technical SMEs and to relay government requirements/expectations

  • Programmatic fluency in the tracking of cost/schedule/performance

  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective technical writing and briefing skills

  • Current TS/SCI clearance with Poly

Desired Qualifications

  • Technical experience in spacecraft systems engineering, integration and testing, and/or spacecraft acquisition

  • Master’s degree in engineering or related discipline

  • 5 years of experience with space R&D acquisition lifecycle, processes, and documentation
