Job Summary

AECOM’s Sustainability team comprises of specialists within our Building and Places Business Line. We are recognised as industry leaders in the field of sustainable development. Our projects range from working with Governments to support Building Regulations and National planning policy relating to climate change, to developing energy and sustainability strategies to support the design and planning of new development and the resilience of cities.

We work across all construction stages, from pre-feasibility, through feasibility, design, construction and operation; and across a wide range of sectors - housing, healthcare, schools, universities, offices, retail, hospitality etc. We also deliver advice relating to existing building portfolios and city scale decarbonisation. Our work includes:

  • The development of policy on low carbon and renewable energy, climate change and sustainability issues at national, regional and local levels

  • Preparing industry-leading best practice guidance and policy advice for Government, GLA, RIBA and CIBSE

  • Sustainable masterplanning of new communities

  • Energy strategies including the planning and design of decentralised energy infrastructure and energy statements

  • Sustainability statements and appraisals

  • Design advice and feasibility studies for new build and refurbishment projects

  • Environmental assessments - BREEAM, LEED, WELL, Home Quality Mark and the RICS Ska Rating

  • Circular economy strategies and embodied carbon calculations

  • The development of Corporate Social Responsibility policies and carbon footprint reporting

  • Climate Action Plans for local authorities and businesses.

  • Research into reducing energy use, improving resilience to climate change and creating more sustainable buildings and places.

In response to growing interest in sustainability issues, we are seeing an increasing demand for our consultancy services to assist building projects, organisations, cities and regions to develop carbon strategies and action plans for achieving net zero emissions. We are seeking a Consultant to join our established London based Sustainable Development Group.

Job Responsibilities:

Your key responsibilities, with support from the team, may include the following:

  • Input to new-build projects and masterplans on how to minimise energy demands and seek to achieve net zero performance

  • Provide consultancy support to organisations (public and private sector) to develop carbon reduction and GHG emissions reduction strategies

  • Support building energy modelling and other analyses with the appropriate tools,

  • Contribute to the development of energy strategies to support building design teams and energy statements to support planning applications

  • Support to local authorities, cities and regions to develop multi-sectoral strategies for achieving net zero, including through design of district heating and renewable energy systems

  • Contributing to a wide range of projects as the work load dictates

  • Delivering high quality, clearly written outputs.

  • Under general supervision, provides analysis on projects. Executes work plans and task definition, participates in data collection.

  • Participates in development of solutions to client problems with a focus on financial analysis and capital investment under the guidance of a more senior manager.

  • Assigned as a consultant to a wide variety of areas.

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience or training in the use of SAP

  • Experience in preparing or supporting the development of Energy Strategies and Statements

  • Understanding of the energy and carbon implications of alternative heating and servicing solutions

  • An ability to communicate effectively, be client-facing and able to write concise and clear reports;

  • Have a good understanding of and interest in sustainable development issues as they relate to the built environment

If not currently chartered, ideally should be working towards chartership with a rel

Preferred Qualifications

  • A science, engineering or building-related degree; a building sustainability/energy related MSc is desirable
