This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate, Aerospace Components and Subsystems Tech Division, Optoelectronics Technology Branch. The Optoelectronic Technology Branch performs basic and applied research to discover and develop novel optoelectronic, laser, and power electronic concepts through the exploitation of structure-property interactions to ensure continued USAF sensor and countermeasure technology dominance.

Job Summary: The Ultrafast Photonics Devices and Research Laboratory, located within the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Sensors Directorate, is seeking a highly motivated photonics engineer to contribute to on-going R&D efforts in an emerging field of integrated microwave photonics. The ideal candidate exhibits excellent communication skills, is eager to learn, and is excited to work in a multi-disciplinary team. As a member of the Ultrafast Photonics team, you will contribute to the design, development, and testing of novel photonic devices and sub-systems – helping advance the field of microwave photonics. You will also have opportunities to participate in seminars and workshops, and document results through presentations and journal publications.

Job Responsibilities and Expectations

Responsibilities include the characterization and subsequent documentation of photonic devices (lasers, modulators, detectors, passive components, etc.) and RF sub-system performance (noise figure, gain, spur free dynamic range, etc.). The candidate will help develop photonic systems, including mechanical layout, integrated photonic design, and user control. The candidate will contribute to exploratory and applied research projects within the areas of nonlinear optics, microwave photonics, and/or novel photonic signal processing.

Required Qualifications

•Working knowledge of photonic components (lasers, modulators, photodetectors).

•Experience using common optical test equipment (spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal analyzers).

•Experience using RF and electrical components and test equipment (signal generators, oscilloscopes, spectrum and network analyzers).

•Self-motivated, with strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment across different disciplines.

•B.S or M.S. degree in electrical engineering, photonics, optics, physics, or related field

•Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance, which requires, among other things, that they be U.S. citizen.

Desired Qualifications

•Laboratory experience probing RF or photonic integrated circuits

•Familiarity with the design of electrical circuits particularly feedback control (phase-locked loops, implementation of PID controllers)

•Experience using optical, electrical, and mechanical layout and simulation software (KLayout, Cadence, RSoft, Lumerical, SolidWorks)

•Graduate/undergraduate GPA > 3.0
