The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has undertaken an organization-wide initiative to reengineer the entire systems acquisition process, incorporating the latest approaches in Digital Engineering and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and requiring sets of related models that describe and analyze the desired systems.  The initiative requires experts, with a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills, who can develop creative solutions to complex systems engineering challenges.

SAIC is in need of a Senior Systems Engineer (MBSE) to support our NAVAIR System Engineering Transformation (SET) team, using Systems Modeling Language (SysML), in California, MD.  Relocation assistance is available.

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing technical guidance to the NAVAIR effort on specific modeling focus areas, and for designated program or project modeling activities.  They will also be expected to develop model structures and elements when required.  Their responsibilities will include:

Review existing models and documentation to determine compliance with best practices in systems engineering, modeling, and MBSE.

Provide guidance to junior and journey level system engineers and modelers in model development, including detailed instructions related to the use of specific tools and validation activities to resolve model development challenges.

Review and characterize new or updated technologies for possible incorporation into NAVAIR MBSE efforts.

Engage with multiple levels of program and NAVAIR leadership to maintain communication and to provide effective recommendations for MBSE implementation.

Maintain proficiency and expertise in the most current MBSE concepts, tools, techniques, and practices.

This position reports to the Senior Principle Systems Engineer (MBSE) for coordination and tasking. 


  • U.S. Citizen with an Active Secret Level Security Clearance.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience developing a variety of SysML models at the project / department level.
  • Worked on requirements modeling, use case analysis, interface design, parametrics, and created SysML profiles.
  • Awareness of SysML challenges and semantic subtleties to overcome potential Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) issues.
  • Experience with an object-oriented language (Java, Python, C++, etc.) using OO techniques.
  • Knowledge of one or more of these concepts as they apply to SysML: Inheritance, aggregation, interface, design pattern, loose coupling, high cohesion, abstraction, properties, and / or methods. 
  • Experience with DevOps, workflow processes, repository usage, issue tracking, and configuration management. 
  • Experience/understanding of Systems Engineering concepts.
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills.
  • An MS or MA degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related scientific discipline or a BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related scientific discipline and an additional four (4) years of recent and relevant experience may be substituted for a MS or MA degree. 
  • These four (4) years of experience are in addition to the required minimum of ten (10) years of recent and relevant experience in an engineering position, three (3) of which must be directly related to naval systems, therefore, requiring a total of fourteen (14) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience/understanding of one or more domains: Test and Evaluation, Safety, Cyber Security, Reliability, Propulsion, Structures.
  • Awareness of enterprise IT issues/concepts.
