Job Summary

As a Senior ITS/Traffic Engineer in the ITS/Traffic Department you will assist with a variety of work including traffic signal timing/operations, traffic engineering studies, safety studies, traffic signal design, ITS planning, ITS architecture, ITS design, and ITS communications. We regularly perform hands-on signal operations work, so you'll have the opportunity to implement and fine-tune traffic signal timing plans, troubleshooting traffic signal equipment, and program and troubleshoot traffic signal and ITS communications network equipment. You'll also have the opportunity to design cutting edge ITS projects that implement the latest technologies for improving surface street transportation. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead/manage design of intersection and traffic signal design projects according to each agency’s standards and plan development processes

  • Lead the development of traffic engineering and safety studies

  • Lead/manage development and implementation of coordinated traffic signal timing plans, including building and optimizing Synchro models, developing timing databases, coordinating with agency staff to determine implementation needs/desires, implementing new timings, fine-tuning new timings, and conducting before and after travel time studies

  • Lead active management of signal timing systems with 50 to 100 signals. Provide quality reviews of reports and studies documenting active management activities

  • Assess the performance of traffic signal and communications equipment and prepare reports

  • Perform troubleshooting and repair of traffic signal and communications equipment and prepare reports

  • Effectively manage assigned projects/tasks and be in responsible charge of task activities and schedule

  • Manage client expectations to ensure the client is highly satisfied with the project(s)

  • Effectively manage project teams including engineers, planners, and technicians

  • Mentor/train junior staff

  • Develop new business by fostering existing and new client relationships

  • Assist with and/or lead proposal development opportunities, including go/no-go decisions, determining teaming partners, scoping tasks, preparing estimates, and managing a proposal development team

  • Periodic travel required within Georgia and neighboring states to serve GDOT signal timing projects and visit clients

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Reports to Senior ITS/Traffic Manager

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited school or commensurate years’ experience and/or education with Traffic Signal Operations and Design

  • 4 Years of related experience with BS or 8 years of related industry experience

  • Experience and demonstrated ability using the following software/firmware: Synchro/SimTraffic, MaxTime/MaxView, ACTRA/TACTICS, SEPAC, and MicroStation

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good time management skills, a strong work ethic, attention to detail

  • 10+ years of experience in traffic engineering
