Title:

Sr. Human Factors Engineer (Supporting NASA at Johnson Space Center)

KBR is seeking a Senior Human Factors Engineering (HFE) subject matter expert to support business development efforts and implementation of proposals for KBR Government Solutions. The candidate will work collaboratively with business development, capture, and proposal teams, business partners, and operational organizations throughout the procurement cycle, providing HFE as well as Human System Integration (HSI) insight. Additionally, the candidate will provide HFE expertise to NASA projects as part of the Human Factors and System Management team, which supports the Habitability and Human Factors Branch at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. This team provides research, analysis, evaluation and usability testing of crew interfaces for work areas and equipment. This includes computer displays and controls, workstation systems, and other types of crew interfaces.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Apply human performance principles, methodologies, and technologies to the design of human-machine systems and products.
  • Develop and implement research methodologies and statistical analysis plans to test and evaluate developmental prototypes used in new products and processes, such as cockpit designs, user workstations, and computerized human models.
  • Interface with design engineers to establish system design, operating, and training requirements and to ensure optimized human-machine interfaces.
  • Identify and analyze technological problems or risks, perform human factors investigations, and develop and implement trade and analysis plans.

Specific Duties include:

  • Prepare proposals for research calls from NASA, commercial entities, or external funding organizations, or develop directed research proposals.
  • Attend all key, relevant Business Development activities such as opportunity reviews, capture reviews, or other required meetings.
  • Develop messaging, positioning and value propositions specific to customer and proposal development efforts. Participate in color teams and compliance reviews.
  • Collaborate with Business Development counterparts and Operations team members in engaging customers relating to key opportunities. Cultivate strategic partnerships to strengthen KBR’s win probability.
  • Present at and/or participate in trade conferences to increase awareness of KBR and keep informed on business opportunities and trends.
  • Conduct task analysis, human error analysis, usability testing, prototyping, heuristic evaluations, literature reviews, tool assessments, and human-in-the-loop evaluations.
  • Disseminate results through submission of peer-reviewed publications and/or technical reports, and present findings at professional society meetings.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

Candidate must have a minimum of a Doctoral Degree in human factors engineering, ergonomics, industrial engineering or closely related technical discipline with 10 years of related experience. The candidate must have experience in physical ergonomics (e.g., anthropometry, biomechanics, and environmental impacts on performance), human error analysis, human-centered design principles, and task analysis. The candidate must also have demonstrated experience in business development activities, which includes working with a capture teams to facilitate the development of gap analysis, win themes, discriminators, and competitive analysis, as well as delivering proposals that are compliant with the proposal requirements and consistent with the direction of the capture team.

Desired:

Additionally, familiarity with industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1472, NASA-STD-3001) and human space flight is desired.

SKILLS/TRAINING

Required:

The candidate must have demonstrated leadership capabilities, including oversight of a team and mentoring of team members. The qualified applicant must also have excellent oral and written communication skills, both formal and informal.

Desired:

Candidate should have the ability to effectively interact with customers at all levels and successfully collaborate across disciplines, laboratories or agencies. Experience with spacecraft layout and crew workstation design and evaluation is desired.
