Job Summary

AECOM’s Transit and Rail Signals group is seeking a Transit & Rail Signals Design Engineer to work with an existing team of design engineers and technicians. The position is open for immediate employment based out of AECOM’s Calgary, Alberta office. This is a position of an experienced signals design engineer who is seeking a challenging position in their field.

This individual would deliver both large and small-scale signals projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Canada, and at times in the US as well. As a signal design team member, the successful applicant will have multiple roles:

Team Management / Leadership:

  • Primary role as a Signals Design engineer

  • Attend client meetings and respond to RFP – Technical Scope definition and estimation

  • Act as the designated signals/systems specialist.

  • Act as the designated signals/systems specialist on complex rail projects

  • Comply with corporate safety, values and initiatives.


  • Projects will be for:

o North American heavy-rail freight and passenger systems to AREMA C&S standards

o LRT and Subway transit systems

  • Perform hands-on design and perform 1st-level checks of designs

  • Perform design, review, and checking (up to 2nd level) for:

o New and modified vital circuitry and application logic programs for automatic block systems, centralized traffic control, interlockings, and highway grade crossing warning systems.

  • Review own work and work done by others for adherence to applicable standards, rules and regulations, as well as all applicable client standards and signal design policies and procedures.

  • Prepare technical specifications.

  • Perform hands-on design.

Business Development:

  • Support proposal preparation and business development for AECOM’s signals/systems business

  • Estimate engineering effort (fees) and schedules for signals design assignment

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS + 2 YORE or Diploma/Certificate+ 4 YORE or HS/GED + 6 YORE

  • Engineering in Training (EIT)

  • Understanding of CN (GI’s & SCP’s) or CP (RP’s).

  • Experience in Signal Project estimation for RFPs

  • Experience with LRT and/or subway signaling.

  • Competent written and verbal English skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in Signals

  • P. Eng. licensed in any Province.

  • Experience with Metrolinx, TTC, CN, CP, VIA Rail, AMT or similar.

  • In addition to office-based design, also experience with testing/commissioning, construction, maintenance, and/or operations.

  • Extensive rail signaling design experience.

  • Experience delivering projects for commuter rail or freight rail.

  • Significant experience with AREMA-based heavy-rail signal design.

  • In depth knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations pertaining to railroad and transit signal systems and highway-rail grade crossing warning systems. Must specifically include knowledge of AREMA C&S Recommended Practices, GCS, GCR, CROR, and industry standards.

  • Experience in grade crossing and vital microprocessor-based interlocking equipment programming.

  • Proficient in highway grade crossing warning design, microprocessor-based constant warning time devices.

  • Proficient in wayside signaling including ABS, CTC and Interlocking, both relay logic and Boolean or ladder logic.

  • Proficient at reading and interpreting Braking Analysis to provide correct aspects accordingly

  • Experience with / working knowledge of both AutoCAD and MicroStation.

  • Experience writing technical specifications.

  • Experience undertaking design reviews.
