Job Summary

Responsible for independently supervising Stages 1-4 archaeological field work under the direction of senior project archaeologists. Must be able to perform strenuous archaeological fieldwork in all weather conditions, and be able to work out of town within Ontario for extended periods of time. Supervisors are expected to prioritize health and safety and follow all AECOM procedures. A firm and thorough understanding of the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries' Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists is required. Collaboration in a team environment is key. Valid Ontario driver’s license is an asset.

Minimum Requirements

BA/BS + 2 Years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Research or Professional class license issued by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport.

  • 5+ years of experience conducting archaeological fieldwork preferred.

  • 1+ field seasons independently supervising teams during excavations under own issued Research License required.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct strenuous physical labour outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to supervise field crews conducting Stages 2-4 archaeological assessments.

  • Experience operating high precision GPS and Total Station equipment.

  • Proven physically ability and care when conducting excavations.

  • Firm understanding of MTCS Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists.

  • Artifact identification skills and experience for the identification of both First Nation and Euro-Canadian material.

  • Valid Drivers License

  • First Aid Certification an asset.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Conduct performance reviews and effectively manage field staff.

  • Willingness to continually learn and take direction from Field and Office Managers.

  • Provide clear and accurate communication regarding field discoveries, field strategies, and staff issues between the field and office teams.

  • Provide feedback and make decisions regarding the hiring and termination of field technicians.

  • Clearly communicate and document discussions with field technicians regarding performance and behavior.

  • Attend work in a prepared manner for all weather conditions, ensuring appropriate weather gear in readily available.

  • Ability to take clear and accurate field notes.

  • Leads by example for health and safety processes.

  • Manages health and safety processes in the field.

  • Willing to work out of town, across Ontario for extended periods of time.

  • Leading by example, taking ownership for supervisory responsibilities.

  • Provide effective and respectful supervision to the field crew as well as support to Field and Office Managers.
