Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a talented Design Manager for immediate employment for our San Diego, California office.

The Design Manager is responsible for managing the Design Review Process for assigned projects and ensuring the Design Consultants receive review comments, constructability comments and value engineering comments in a timely manner to allow the Design Consultant to incorporate comments prior to the following Design Submittal.

The Design Manager is responsible for ensuring all material changes identified by the Design Review are incorporated by the Design consultant into the project plans and specifications.

Job Duties

The Design Manager will be responsible for managing the Design Review process including, but not limited to the following general areas:

  • Functional: facility requirements including, but not limited to, space planning, lighting, building materials, finish materials, energy usage (conservation), handicap access, public convenience, utilities, pedestrian and vehicular access, egress and security.

  • Technical: conformance with applicable codes and regulations, accuracy of design calculations (electrical, HVAC, structural, mechanical, space, allocation, noise, etc.) and established standards. Constructability review will be held simultaneously to assure that all disciplines are coordinated and the drawings are properly cross-referenced.

  • Operations and Maintenance: design issues which may interfere with the Operations and or maintainability of facilities and utilities, interface with existing operations, access, egress, etc.

  • Constructability: design issues which may interfere with other Airport projects and the actual construction process, including subsurface information, interface with other Program or Projects, existing facilities and utilities, interface with existing operations, access, egress, availability of proposed building materials, long lead procurement, labor sources, etc. The DM will organize the Constructability review to include the PM, Airport staff and professionals from outside firms as appropriate and required

  • Design Quality: This review shall concentrate on the quality of architecture, urban design, massing, landscape design, materials, image, design expression and visual compatibility with adjacent projects.

  • Claims Avoidance: This review shall examine the design document submittals specifically focusing on contract language and general requirements of the plans and specifications relative to accuracy, completeness, clarity, equitable risk sharing, reasonableness, ambiguous language, conflicts, errors and omission.

  • Cost Effectiveness: The design review does not concentrate on the cost effectiveness to the level addressed and covered in other reviews. However, design conformance to the budget is critical in the approval process. Failure of the design to meet the Basis of Design will delay the approval to move forward with the next design phase.

  • Value Engineering: Value Engineering is an ongoing review process designed to ensure the Contract Drawings fulfill program requirements for performance, quality, aesthetics, and budget at a reasonable life cycle cost. The review process is established by the DM and includes appropriate personnel with requisite skills and background experience required to comprehensively and effectively evaluate the project.

  • Preparing Review Comments: Preparing review comments including: list all questions requiring clarification; identify omitted work; communicate specific technical deficiencies (such as form, fit, and connections); provide recommended claims avoidance language; communicate general deficiencies (such as logic, legibility, clarity, coordinate and state of completeness); and request substantiation that the design satisfies functional specifications (such as output, control and timing).

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree plus 8 years of relevant experience or Associates Degree plus 10 years of relevant experience or a High School Diploma plus 12 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture

  • Minimum of 8 to 12 years of increasingly responsible relevant professional experience.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with design providers, Airport divisions, government agencies, employees and the public

  • Ability to produce clear, concise written documents

  • Strong ability to interpret design plans

  • Thoroughly familiar with the principles of Quality Assurance and Quality Control for design

  • Hands on experience as design project manager with architectural (preferred) or engineering firm.
