Job Summary

Our Transportation Group currently has a vacancy for a Senior Traffic Engineer within our East Midlands Roads Team based in our Chesterfield office . The successful candidate will ideally be Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (I Eng.), or working towards this level.

Office Overview:

  • Our modern office is located within Chesterfield Town Centre and close to all public transport routes. The team provides concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed design on a wide range of highway and traffic engineering projects .

Current Projects:

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local and national projects. A selection of our recent projects include:

  • Woodville Link Road, and

  • Chesterfield Staveley Regeneration Route - 5km road with 5 river/canal bridges.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of preliminary or detailed design of highway and traffic engineering schemes;

  • Contribute to the preparation of fee proposals;

  • Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief;

  • Manage sub-consultants to produce deliverables against agreed timescales and in line with budget;

  • Sharing knowledge and supporting the team to create a collaborative work environment;

  • Day to day client point of contact for smaller projects;

  • Familiarity with relevant Health and Safety, CDM and to promote a culture of safety awareness within the team.

Specific Skills Required:

  • Appropriate previous experience of public/private sector working;

  • Knowledge of emerging best practice in transport, traffic, public realm and highway engineering;

  • Experience in managing projects or tasks, including Client and Design Team liaison;

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills;

  • Experience of applying the principles of DMRB, the Traffic Signs Manual and 3D Design and

  • In addition good knowledge of Manual for Streets would be beneficial but not mandatory.

  • Performs specific and moderate portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.

  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.

  • Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.

  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered using modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignements.

  • Identifies discrepancies in results.

  • Provides guidance to entry level engineers.

  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.

  • Independently performs all the tasks necessary to complete primary design elements for engineering works.

  • Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional position.

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience and knowledge of developing feasibility and preliminary design schemes;

  • Knowledge or experience in some of the following aspects: cycling, walking, bus priority, corridor studies, traffic calming, parking and junction design and

  • Knowledge of local and national design standards.

  • Candidates with experience in some of the following skills would also be beneficial:

  • Road Safety Audits,

  • traffic modelling utilising LINSIG, ARCADY and PICADY,

  • ability to act as Delegated Engineer or Mentor and

  • Practical experience of Microsoft Project.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HND, BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject;
