Job Summary

TAMS (an AECOM company) is looking for a Draftsperson, Piping to join our Shell Sarnia project team in Sarnia Ontario. This is a Full Time position; 5 days on 2 days off rotation.

This is a future job opportunity with anticipation of start date in summer months.

Reporting to the Site Manager, the Draftsperson is responsible for performing standardized or prescribed CADD assignments, involving a sequence of related operations in accordance with Business Unit requirements and standards including liaising with client personnel. The role supports the Site Manager in delivering the Drafting Specialist support to the respective Business Units.


  • Works under direct, close supervision.

  • Follows specific, standardized procedures to achieve set results and deadlines.

  • Performs routine applications, scale and edit assignments involving the use of computer aided design and drafting equipment and other graphics software (e.g. CADD software) to achieve set results and deadlines.

  • Digitize or trace sketches or concepts from designers using CADD software, such as AutoCAD and Solidworks

  • Works on assignments that are routine in nature, requiring limited judgment.

  • Works to project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards and procedures.

  • Coordinates work with that of others in discipline group and other discipline groups on the project.

  • Prepares complete information for design details, bill of materials, etc., that can be distributed to other design or draft personnel for completion.

  • Understands project scope as presented within a specific discipline.

  • Ensures that designs are consistent with project technical requirements and scope.

  • Provides support for client’s engineering deliverables.

  • Advises the Design Supervisor, Lead Designer or Supervising Discipline Engineer about status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays and adverse problems.

  • Checks assigned drawings supplied by vendors, clients and other discipline groups throughout the project to ensure quality designs.

  • Provides technical guidance and assistance to other design and draft personnel and is responsible for neatness and accuracy of work.

  • Ensures quality, quantity and completeness of the assigned design tasks.

  • Plans and schedules design tasks associated with assigned project.

  • Keeps proper files and records related to assigned design activities.

  • Develops understanding of industry codes and standards.

  • Understands and uses computer software and applications associated with design assignments.

  • Continually upgrades technical knowledge and capabilities and pursues additional coursework and training.

  • Complies with company’s safety awareness program, office and/or field safety policies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma /Certificate, plus 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • Experience with mechanical or piping drafting or maintenance.

  • Solid understanding of 2D or 3D engineering or piping design.

  • Able to verify field dimensions and develop isometric drawings.

  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing MS office (Word, Excel and Outlook).

  • Great organization and time management skills.

  • Able to work independently and as part of team.

  • Valid Driver’s License and a clean driver’s abstract required.

  • Valid Safety tickets and site tickets will be determined upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing AutoCAD or CADWorx or equivalent 2D/3D modelling software with a strong sense of Design/Drafting is an asset.

  • Previous Mechanical trade/craft experience is preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of Solidworks is preferred.

  • Design / Drafting experience on Oil & Gas process equipment to include, but not limited to: Pressure Vessels, piping systems and natural gas dehydration is preferred

  • Experience with Power industry or Oil&Gas refining is an asset.

  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in a Mechanical Drafting, Technical Engineering is preferred.

  • The ability to understand engineering documents, isometric drawings, codes and specifications is preferred.
