AECOM’s Middle East and Africa (MEA) environment team deliver marine projects throughout the region, including the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea. Our projects involve environmental assessment and permitting across numerous sectors, including tourism; oil and gas; ports and harbours; coastal utilities and manufacturing; and major land reclamation and dredging.
The role of the Senior Marine Scientist will be varied, involving a number of duties, both office and field-based.
Office-based responsibilities will include the management and delivery of both marine and multi-disciplinary EIA/ESIA/ESHIA projects, including environmental permitting. The candidate will have the ability to accurately analyse and report environmental data and produce concise technical reports (as an expert marine ecologist). Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required since the role will include frequent client, contractor, subcontractor and stakeholder liaison, and the delivery of presentations to a wide audience.
Field-based and related activities will encompass planning, coordinating and leading multi-tier marine environmental surveys, ranging from high-level walkover surveys to more detailed, quantitative habitat and species surveys.
Duties and Responsibilities
Excellent project management and communication skills. The management of multi-disciplinary projects will be required and will involve frequent consultation with clients, contractors, subcontractors and stakeholders, including national regulatory bodies.
The ability to manage projects in a timely manner is essential, in relation to both the management of the project schedule and finances, and the production of key deliverables on time and within budget.
Must be competent in leading the planning, coordination and undertaking of marine environmental surveys including remote drop-down video surveys; water and sediment sample collection; infaunal and plankton sampling and processing; and SCUBA diver-based surveys (transects/quadrat methods incorporating photography and videography, sediment coring etc.).
Must have knowledge and practical experience in undertaking EIAs and preparing EMPs, particularly for coastal and marine-based projects. Also required is experience in the design and implementation of environmental monitoring programmes, particularly for water quality and marine ecological interests.
Excellent analytical and reporting skills. Will be expected to handle and analyse environmental data and report findings in a technical and concise manner.
Confident and competent in the preparation and delivery of presentations to both technical specialists and non-technical audiences.
Assumed high-level of competency in the use of Microsoft Office.
Projects will be based throughout the region, so the candidate must be prepared and willing to travel throughout the region, when required.
Previous experience of working in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf and excellent knowledge of the regional marine fauna and flora, particularly coral identification.
Proven track record in the technical reporting and delivery of IFC-compliant environmental assessments, specifically IFC Performance Standard 6 (Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable. Management of Living Natural Resources) and associated deliverables (CHA, BAP, BMP etc.).
Experienced in the use and application of specialist statistical software (e.g. PRIMER).
Experience in the application of marine habitat enhancement/restoration techniques (e.g. artificial reef construction and deployment, seagrass and mangrove restoration).
B.Sc. (Hons.) in biological or environmental science, preferably marine-orientated.
PADI Rescue Diver certification or above. Equivalent or more advanced certification obtained through another suitably accredited organisation (e.g. BSAC, HSE (UK), CMAS etc.) is acceptable.
M.Sc. in a marine scientific discipline.
Membership of a Professional Environmental Organisation (e.g. MCIEEM, MIEMA) and/or Chartership (e.g. CEnv., CEcol.)
