Title:

Science Data Lifecycle Lead

KBR is seeking to fill a full-time Science Data Lifecycle Lead position to support the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center ( http://eros.usgs.gov/ ), located near Sioux Falls, SD ( http://www.siouxfalls.org at http://www.siouxfalls.org/ ).

The successful candidate will become an integral part of the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC, https://lpdaac.usgs.gov ), a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) funded project, located at the USGS EROS Center. The LP DAAC operates as a partnership between the USGS and NASA and is a component of NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System ( EOSDIS at https://earthdata.nasa.gov/about-eosdis ). Highly-talented data scientists, remote sensing scientists, software engineers, system engineers, user service specialists, communication specialists, outreach staff, and system operations staff work together to support LP DAAC ingest, archive, and distribution activities as well as serve, support, and educate the science user community. The Science Data Lifecycle Lead manages product life cycle activities for LP DAAC data products and interacts closely with data providers preparing data, metadata and documentation for archive and distribution, as well as with other LPDAAC TSSC Leads on all functional areas of LP DAAC. Experience:

  • At least 5 years of directly related professional experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in remote sensing, GIS, geography or equivalent. Master’s degree is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads the Science Data Lifecycle team on data product life cycle activities involving preservation and distribution of data
  • Works closely with data providers and science teams regarding characteristics of new data products providing relevant information in associated algorithm documents, user guides, and web content
  • Coordinates with data providers on data product and metadata evaluation
  • Communicates with Science Investigator-led Processing Systems (SIPS) for data product status and data deliveries
  • Supports data format and metadata standards for requirements in preservation of the data archive and user distribution
  • Supports routine quality assessment of LP DAAC data products
  • Establishes documents in maintaining best practices and standard operating procedures
  • Travels to relevant conference and science team meetings
  • Provides status on science data lifecycle tasks through supported reporting techniques
  • Prepares and presents project results and methodology to customers as requested
  • Maintains regular communication with staff, customers and managers

Requirements :

  • Fundamental understanding of the characteristics and applications of instruments such as LIDAR, ECOSTRESS, MODIS, VIIRS, ASTER and Hyperspectral
  • Demonstrable knowledge of GIS techniques, remote sensing principles, and related science applications
  • Experience in processing and analyzing imagery with GIS and remote sensing software packages, such as ArcGIS, ENVI and QGIS
  • Familiarity with data formats and metadata standards
  • Familiarity with data quality assessments
  • Ability to communicate regularly and professionally at technical and management levels e.g. team members, science teams and science user community
  • Strong attention to organization, detail and record keeping
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including effective questioning, listening, and presentation skills
  • Self-starter with an ability to multi-task
  • Work location for the Science Data LifeCycle Lead is at the EROS Data Center, Sioux Falls, SD

Desired Skills :

  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python and R
  • Familiarity with using GDAL for science data transformations
  • Demonstrable proficiency with Linux operating system and functions

The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
