Laser Systems Research Engineer

At KBR, We Deliver by transforming science into new possibilities for our customers. Be part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and researchers to discover and develop new and relevant military-critical electronics to maintain our nation’s air, space, and cyber superiority.

This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate, Aerospace Components and Subsystems Tech Division, Optoelectronics Technology Branch. The Optoelectronic Technology Branch performs basic and applied research to discover and develop novel optoelectronic, laser, and power electronic concepts through the exploitation of structure-property interactions to ensure continued USAF sensor and countermeasure technology dominance.

Job Duties

KBR is seeking a post-doctorate researcher or an individual working towards a graduate degree to join a team supporting ongoing research and development projects in the areas of nonlinear optics, laser cavities, high-power, high-brightness semiconductor lasers. The individual will work closely with a diverse group of scientists and engineers from the Optoelectronic Technology Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH. The focus of this research is to develop spectral and temporally diverse semiconductor lasers for sensors applications, from the near-wave through long-wave infrared optical spectrum.

Required Skills & Experience

Ph.D degree in Physics or Engineering with applied optical lab experience is preferred, but individuals pursuing a graduate degree will be considered.

Experience: The successful candidate should be familiar with semiconductor laser device characterization, including power curves, optical spectra, RF spectra, beam quality measurements, and pulse autocorrelation measurements. The candidate should have experience in standard material characterization such as a variety of linear and nonlinear spectroscopy as well as nonlinear optical characterization.

Desired Skills and Experience

Experience with supercontinuum generation and frequency combs, optical amplifiers, as well as laser stabilization techniques is desired. Techniques for modelling and simulation of semiconductor materials and cavities is highly desired, and familiarity with typical tools (e.g. Matlab, Lumerical, COMSOL, or similar) is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The individual should be familiar with most of the standard materials characterization techniques. He/she should be capable of collecting, analyzing and presenting scientific data. The candidate also should be able to apply theories in explanation of scientific results and physical phenomena, and to participate in determining future research directions. Cleanroom fabrication of III-V materials experience preferred.

Applicant selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. US Citizenship required.
