Sr. Specialist Mechanical Engineer - Security Clearance


KBR’s Development and Integration Program, an AS9100 Certified organization, is looking for a Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to join our team for an exciting opportunity supporting a diverse project portfolio and technical workforce at our laboratory in Lexington Park, MD. Our team executes new design, reverse engineering, analysis, prototyping, fabrication, assembly and testing to support a wide variety of customer’s reliability, maintainability, quality, supportability and interoperability (RMQSI) projects across KBR’s Engineering Business Unit. Specifically, we are looking for qualified candidates to lead Mechanical oriented projects. The ideal candidate will be responsible for design, analysis, prototyping, fabrication, assembly, test and repair of mechanical parts, airframes, racks, avionics enclosures, cable harness assemblies, to name a few. A critical capability will be to use 3D CAD/CAM and analysis tools to develop virtual concept designs, to then prototype designs using subtractive manufacturing (CNC, Mills, Lasers, etc.) and additive manufacturing (multi-material 3D printers; plastic, powder metal, carbon fiber), to assemble and document the system, and perform testing to verify the design meets requirements for manned and unmanned military systems. The selected candidate will perform an array of tasks on multiple concurrent projects, while working with a small team within our AS9100 Quality Management System (QMS) processes. The typical project tasking will support different aircraft and ground support systems programs for US Navy, US Air Force, US Army, NASA and FMS customers.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or relevant discipline, from an ABET accredited University, and a minimum of 7 years relevant experience (8 years of directly relevant experience and technical courses may be substituted for the educational requirements)
  • Clearance Requirement: US Citizen with an Active DoD Secret Security clearance, and eligibility for a DoD Top Secret Security clearance


  • Bachelor’s Degree plus 10+ years of relevant experience
  • In-depth experience with military aircraft mechanical airframes, systems, and avionics rack/bay design, maintenance, repair, and associated military publications and standards
  • Proficient using SolidWorks CAD software, or similar, to design complex parts and assemblies
  • Proficient with hand tools, tool kits and measuring techniques, used during assembly and testing of aircraft mechanical systems
  • Experience conducting structural or thermal analysis of complex parts and assemblies using ANSYS multi-physics modeling software, or similar
  • Experience using Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing to create parts and assemblies
  • Experience developing drawings and Technical Data Packages to MIL-STD-31000 and JEDMICS standards


The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Knowledge of failure mode and effects analysis techniques
  • Coordinate with other technical personnel in solving technical problems, gathering information, and specifications
  • Provide qualitative comprehensive reviews of technical drawings, data, specifications, publications and reports
  • Excellent and effective oral and written communications skills and experience interacting with both management and technical staff
  • Maintain customer focus, enabling superior response to and resolving requests from the customer
  • Ability to work well as a team player, working closely with all levels of program and organizational personnel, including but not limited to customers, program/project managers, engineers, testers, quality assurance, and configuration managers
  • Strong interpersonal skills a plus
  • Motivated self-starter, strong logical, creative problem-solving skills and excellent analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Physically capable to work in and around military aircraft and support equipment, and to lift and maneuver loads up to 50 pounds as an individual.
