Systems Engineer

KBR is seeking a Systems Engineer to join its talented team in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. KBR, headquartered in Houston Texas, is the primary contractor to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for performing work at the Earth Resources Observation and Science ( EROS ) Center ( http://eros.usgs.gov/ ) near Sioux Falls, SD ( http://www.siouxfalls.org at http://www.siouxfalls.org/ ).

The Systems Engineer’s role is to ensure that tailored systems engineering rigor is facilitated throughout the UAS Calibration and Lidar research and development and software development lifecycles. The SE guides the development of the ECCOE UAS Calibration and Lidar technology through the Integrated Master Plan, Integrated Master Schedule, Confluence and Jira; and, the SE guides the gathering of requirements for research and development, software maintenance, and release of operational software for end users. This is achieved by embedding the SE with the Principal Investigator (PI) and within the software life cycle processes for UAS Calibration and Lidar tools and software development workflows, capturing, deriving, and writing requirements, developing Ops Con scenarios, supporting the planning and schedule efforts needed by the Principal Investigator, and guiding the Development Team activities throughout the software lifecycle(s). The SE will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of ECCOE UAS Calibration R&D tools and operational software for end users.

Responsibilities :

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with ECCOE staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of UAS Calibration tools and software for fulfilling the ECCOE objectives and processes.
  • Work with ECCOE technical team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define requirements and tool/software functionality goals, and to identify and resolve software development and operational lifecycle challenges.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Design and deploy new applications and enhancements to existing applications, software, and operating systems.
  • Perform engineering trades for proposed functionality to aid management in making implementation decisions.
  • Conduct research on software and systems development products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing new development tools.
  • Interact and negotiate with USGS Government Customers, USGS TSSC Customers, and USGS TSSC team members to develop and deploy ECCOE tools and operational software.

Operational Management

  • Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems for ECCOE functionality objectives.
  • Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to the tools and software development teams.
  • Coordinate system deployment connectivity on servers and support management of release processes.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configurations, requirements, ConOps, and configuration/data management records.
  • Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.
  • Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems.
  • Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems.
  • Provide guidance and assign tasks to Development Staff.

Position Requirements:

Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge of UAS Calibration for research and development, and for application development
  • Knowledge of Lidar research and development, and for application development
  • Proven experience in overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software systems, applications, and related products.
  • Proven experience with systems planning, security principles, and general software management best practices.
  • Good project engineering and project management skills.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required.
  • Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or have prior 3 years U.S. residency

Formal Education

  • The Systems Engineer should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field and 5 - 10 years of related experience

The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
