Cost Estimator Specialist

Performs the following duties for Air Force Institute of Technology School of Systems and Logistics (AFIT/LS). AFIT is committed to providing defense-focused graduate and professional continuing education and research to sustain the technological supremacy of America’s air and space forces. AFIT’s mission is to advance air, space, and cyberspace power for the Nation, its partners, and our armed forces by providing relevant defense-focused technical graduate and continuing education, research, and consultation. This position involves:

§ Providing product support in the form of developing, editing, modifying and teaching course materials.

§ Developing curriculum, instructing students, facilitating discussions, and enabling student-centered active learning using classrooms/technology available at AFIT and conducting consulting for same as necessary.


1. Knowledge Required by the Position:

§ Ability to perform required tasks in support of students/clients interested in Cost Estimation and Cost Analysis and to offer real-life examples of first-hand knowledge of related DoD and Air Force policies and practices.

§ Need to be familiar with and understand DoDI 5000.73, Air Force Instruction (AFI) 65-508, and the Society of Cost Estimating and Analysis (SCEA) Cost Estimating Body of Knowledge (CEBOK).

§ Familiarity with DoD and Air Force cost estimation procedures and cost analysis techniques. Should understand the principles of cost estimating, know the DoD and Air Force cost estimating processes, be able to describe the characteristics of a good cost estimate, be able to assess the quality of a cost estimate, and be able to produce a credible, high-fidelity cost estimate from scratch.

§ An earned Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research, or relevant field of study with demonstrated teaching ability. A Master’s degree (or higher) in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research or relevant field of study, and/or professional teaching experience of adult students is highly desirable.

§ Demonstrated professional knowledge with 6-15 years of specialized experience in cost estimating and/or cost analysis or relevant professional career field.

§ Ability to teach using various modalities, including live in-residence, virtual in-residence, and synchronous and asynchronous distance learning.

§ Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters.

§ Familiarity with AFIT/LS organization structure, research initiatives and processes, and professional points-of-contact is desirable.

§ Eligible to obtain a SECRET security clearance background check investigation and possess a government common access card (CAC).
