Jr. Mechanical Systems Engineer

Position Description:

This candidate will serve as a Junior Mechanical Systems Engineer on-site, and full time at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC to support development and verification activities associated with spaceflight instrument H/W structure, mechanisms, and ground systems. The candidate is responsible for the design, analysis, fabrication, assembly, optical alignment, integration, testing (both environmental and performance), for space flight instrument H/W. Hardware includes structures, mechanisms, and mechanical ground support equipment.

Position Requirements:

  • The candidate will be required to develop mechanical subsystem concepts and designs that meet subsystem requirements and have prior experience in developing mechanical structures and/or mechanism H/W.
  • This will include the generation of mechanical concept designs, test plans, procedures, and reports.
  • The position requires basic knowledge and experience with structural and mechanism design, manufacturing techniques, approved aerospace materials, computer aided design tools, structural/stress analysis techniques including finite element modeling, and knowledge of best practices and requirements for mechanical systems H/W development.
  • The candidate will also be required to prepare and present material for Engineering Peer Reviews and support mechanical and environmental testing.
