KBR is seeking a mid to senior level Contamination Control Engineer to work on one-of-a-kind projects that explore the Earth, Moon, and other planets.

The Contamination Control Engineer will support operations on behalf of our customers to determine, negotiate and implement mission-enabling Contamination Engineering requirements and controls for spacecraft, instruments and associated hardware at customer sites and other locations.

Support the derivation/development, documentation, and implementation of contamination controls for one of several spacecraft programs at the conceptual, design, or manufacturing stage. A Senior level Engineer would lead this effort.

Work with or per the direction of the customer lead Contamination Engineer, addressing a range of responsibilities depending on lead’s availability.

Monitor, review, facilitate and evaluate overall contamination control planning, implementation, and verification.

Work with essentially all other engineering disciplines on the Project to identify contamination sensitivities, develop appropriate risk-based contamination requirements, negotiate Project acceptance of requirements, and manage/facilitate implementation of the contamination control program.

Solve contamination problems encountered during fabrication, assembly, test, and transportation of space hardware.

Create, review, and implement contamination control documentation supporting the design, fabrication, assembly, test, and transportation of one-of-a-kind, highly specialized space hardware.

This involves a mix of work, including hands-on activity in clean facilities.

May need to provide direction or guidance to other engineer(s) and contamination control technician(s).

Oversight roles may involve activities on site at customer facilities, at local and distant off-site vendors, and at launch sites. Travel may be required, typically less than one week a month.

This work may be in collaboration with our customers, or on their behalf, as they choose.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related field
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in Contamination Engineering or a related field, preferably with spacecraft hardware.
  • Ability and experience determining contamination sensitivities and deriving/negotiating contamination requirements based on instrument/system performance characteristics
  • Experience implementing contamination controls in collaboration with the design, hardware production, test and inspection functions
  • Experience with clean room operations and monitoring, materials, vacuum systems, hardware cleaning and inspection methods and knowledge of the space environment (vacuum, particulate and electromagnetic radiation, thermal, atomic oxygen).
  • Good communication skills, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to work in a team, collaborating with engineers and technicians of various disciplines and experience levels, as well as management staff.

Desired Experience, & Skills: Knowledge and experience with visual inspections (white light and UV), non-volatile residue collection and evaluation, particulate contaminant characterization, contamination transport analysis and modeling, are all desirable capabilities. U.S. Citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. is required.
