Title:

Systems Engineer Intern

This unique opportunity is open to juniors, seniors and graduate students pursuing a career in Systems Engineering. This internship opportunity will provide the applicant entry-level System Engineering experience with progressive responsibility and experience. The work will be hands-on support of the various missions at the EROS (Earth Resources Observation and Science) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/), located near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Systems Engineer intern (s) will be assigned a mentor. The interns will telecommute from campus with travel to the EROS Center as their schedule permits and as the project requires. It is expected that the selected interns will work on site at EROS during school breaks, and/or during the summer months. This position holds potential for full-time employment upon graduation, pending project funding.

Core Responsibilities :

The Landsat Systems Engineer Intern assists in providing technical support and systems engineering for the various Landsat systems

  • Communicate and coordinate activities and technical status with various Landsat Task Leads and other Landsat Project team members, as appropriate.
  • Conduct systems engineering activities as defined in the Landsat Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) including preparing systems operations concepts, developing and implementing system requirements, defining and documenting system interface definitions, conducting architecture and trade study analysis, and developing system test plans.
  • Provide technical support for the presentation of required project briefings including the Project Kick-off (PKO), Systems Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), Test Readiness Review (TRR), and the Operational Readiness Review (ORR).
  • Support Project Team tasks and system release schedules with assistance of the Operations Lead and Software Project Lead.
  • Submit, analyze, and manage configuration change requests in accordance with established Configuration Management (CM) processes.
  • Ensure proper process is followed and documentation is properly maintained.
  • Participate in peer reviews.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Support technical activities with other applicable personnel internal and external to the Landsat Project.
  • Support system anomaly investigations and troubleshooting activities affecting the LPGS.
  • Support special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Landsat Task Lead or Landsat Assistant Task Lead, which may include activities such as trade studies or process improvements.
  • Support USGS Landsat Project Management data calls and scenario development along with the assistance of the Landsat Task Lead, Landsat Assistant Task Lead, and other Landsat team members.
