Description

The UNIX/LINUX Systems Engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting problems, suggest enhancements to improve system performance as well as writing system scripts for daily administration and supporting documentation to automate repeatable tasks.  The UNIX/LINUX Systems Engineer will install new software releases, system upgrades, evaluate and install patches and resolve software and hardware related problems. They will also be tasked with performing system backups and recovery as well as maintaining data files and monitors system configuration to ensure data integrity. The UNIX/LINUX Systems Engineer will assist with securing and hardening infrastructure technologies to FDA Scientific Computing and to create/maintain system procedural and technical documentation. This role does allow someone to occasionally work remotely but does require someone to be onsite a couple of days a week. 

 

More specifically, the candidate will: 

  • Have strong UNIX/LINUX fundamentals along with familiarity of UNIX/LINUX/Windows Command Line Interface (CLI)
  • Demonstrated ability to methodically analyze problems and identify potential solutions
  • Ability to adequately explain, present, demonstrate [when applicable] and document the operational impact of a particular vulnerability or exploit
  • Ability to work with non-technical stakeholders to assist in the deployment and development of solutions to technical problems
  • Ability to methodically analyze problems and identify potential solutions
  • Work effectively in a project team as a lead and/or contributor

PROBLEM COMPLEXITY: Develops technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. FREEDOM TO ACT: Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective for desired results. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. IMPACT: Guides the succesful completion of major programs. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives. LIASON: Represents organization as prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have a Bachelors and 5+ years of relevant experience. May consider an additional 4 years of experience in lieu of a degree. Having a Bachelors in Computer Science or a closely related discipline is preferred. 

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, including administration and management of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or greater to include installation, configuration, optimization, backup and recovery. Experience may be substituted for a degree with qualified candidates.

  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance

  • Linux system administration, security patching, OS upgrades, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring maximum availability

  • Experience with one automation framework (e.g. ansible, chef, puppet, etc.)

  • Experience with network authentication methods such as Active Directory, SSSD, or Centrify

  • Knowledge of at least one scripting language (e.g. bash, python, perl).

  • Configuring RHEL operating system, user accounts, file permissions, security certificates, storage management, network file systems, firewalls, etc.

  • Virtual machine creation and maintenance using VMWare ESX and Virtual Center

  • Ability to work independently, as well as, collaborate effectively in a team oriented environment
