ExMC Project Planning/Scheduling (Engineering/Medical)

This position will support the Exploration Medical Capability (ExMC) Element of the Human Research Program Human (HRP) at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas, as part of the Human Health and Performance Contract (HHPC). This team helps to determine and develop the capabilities needed for the health and performance systems for future human exploration missions. The incumbent will work with the ExMC team members at Johnson Space Center (JSC) and across three other NASA Centers: Ames Research Center (ARC) in Mountain View, CA; Glenn Research Center (GRC) in Cleveland, OH; and Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA.

The ExMC Project Planning Lead is prime for the management of schedules and budgets, and teams with both the Clinical Science Team (CST) Technical Lead and the Systems Engineering (SE) Technical Team Lead to track deliverable completion and resource allocations. The CST Lead leverages medical expertise to inform ExMC priorities and clinical content for ExMC deliverables, including exploration medical system design, requirements review, medical risk assessment and reduction. The SE Team Lead guides project teams to create development life cycle artifacts and exceptional systems related to the medical and the crew health and performance systems for future spaceflight. The optimal candidate will have exposure to medical concept operations and requirements development background to facilitate leadership within both areas.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Resource Management

  • Allocate of labor and indirect resources to ExMC projects ($0.5 - $2M) under predetermined schedule and budget constraints
  • Develop proposed cost plans for future work
  • Complete contractual monthly budget estimations and variance reporting

Schedule & Risk Management

  • Manage ExMC master schedules, incorporating team schedules
  • Capture and track ExMC technical and schedule risks and project assumptions, report as necessary
  • Provide schedule and risk inputs to Medical Database Project Manager
  • Plan and execute periodic ExMC Project Planning team meetings

Technical Support

  • Serve as the ExMC medical and systems engineering technical leads in absence of the technical lead
  • Participate in product reviews, as needed
  • Provide input to and review content in ExMC guidance, governance and publications/presentations
  • Support communication and coordination with stakeholders regarding vision, technical planning, and products

Configuration Management

  • Implement configuration management and data management



  • A BS degree in engineering or closely related field, with 10 years of applicable professional experience which has led to increasing levels of technical and leadership responsibilities, or an MS degree with 8 years of experience
  • Technical, functional, and/or project lead experience in systems engineering, medical or a related technical field
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with multi-disciplined teams


  • Project management certification and/or formal training
  • Experience in systems integration
  • Background in full life cycle activities for human spaceflight mission
  • NASA experience in human systems integration
  • Experience with NASA Human Research Program



  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well within a team or independently.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities.
  • Ability to attain and maintain respect and confidence of the customer and contract personnel.
  • History of successful project completions with finite goals and timeframes.


  • Comprehensive knowledge of disciplines within human health and performance
  • Awareness of spaceflight impacts to human physiology, behavior, and medical state
  • Understanding of the history and current state of requirements, intent, and implementation of NASA-STD-3001 across NASA human spaceflight programs
