Materials & Processing Engineer

KBR is seeking a Material Design & Processing Engineer to support the Technology, Engineering and Aerospace Mission Support (TEAMS 3) Contract at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for materials and process (M&P) engineering tasks related to material selection (with emphasis in composites), design, and manufacturing. These tasks include drawing reviews, material selection & characterization, supporting design for producibility, and quality process control.


  • Work with cross-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, to produce world class aerospace hardware
  • Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and quality to define requirements for materials, corrosion-protection systems, non-destructive inspection strategies and successfully implement production solutions
  • Create test plans for characterizing and qualifying raw materials, completed hardware, coatings, and welds
  • Deliver reports & presentations of completed work

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Materials science and engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 5 + years in material and analysis
  • Previous working experience with composite design
  • Knowledge of metals and coating for space vehicles
  • Experience developing and executing plans for material characterization, such as mechanical testing, thermal analysis, chemical analysis, and corrosion testing
  • Experience supporting design and manufacturing teams in an aerospace environment, including preparing specifications, test reports, and design substantiation documentation
  • Experience with statistical treatment of test data and the generation of design values
  • experience in the field of metallurgy, with deep knowledge of the interplay between composition, process, microstructure & properties in one or more alloy systems

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • MS in materials science & engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field
  • Experience with mechanical design and analysis

Must be a US citizen

Must have knowledge and experience in composite design and fabrication related to carbon-carbon lay-ups.
