Science Project Leader

KBR is seeking just the right person to provide Science leadership for one or more projects supporting U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initiatives providing an authoritative satellite-derived basis for regional, continental, and global scale identification of historical change, monitoring current conditions, and helping to project future scenarios to facilitate impact assessments and strategic development for adaptation and mitigation. This position is well-suited to candidates with a science background, but with skills and interest in project management.

KBR , headquartered in Houston, Texas, is the primary contractor to the USGS for performing work at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center ( near Sioux Falls, SD ( Sioux Falls residents enjoy small town friendliness in a big town atmosphere, year-long outdoor recreation, professional sports and entertainment events, and no state income tax.

Education : B.S. or M.S in Science and or Business

Experience : 0-10 years

Job Description:

The USGS EROS Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) Science Division is seeking to grow its leadership team to support the research, development, and operation of satellite-based information products. Its current portfolio provides technical support to USGS projects that integrate land, water, and fire science programs through an evolution towards high performance computing platforms such as the Cloud to facilitate investigations, data processing, visualization, and distribution of products that inform environmental change studies.

The TSSC Science Project Lead will catalyze versatile and talented teams of scientists and engineers to fulfill USGS mission goals within well-managed schedule and budget definitions. This role supports the larger Science Division Management team and may focus on daily technical task coordination, overall project management, or a combination of both.

Responsibilities :

  • Manage the scope, schedule, and budget of Science project(s)
  • Organize, direct, and supervise staff priorities and tasks to ensure USGS goals are understood and fulfilled
  • Communicate with TSSC managers, USGS customers, and any related project collaborators

Requirements :

  • Minimum 3 years residence in the U.S.
  • Willingness to relocate in or around Sioux Falls, SD
  • Motivation towards continuous learning
  • Commitment to enabling staff strengths to efficiently meet project needs
  • Ownership, organization, and prioritization of multiple tasks
  • Adaptability to circumstances while meeting strategic goals
  • Ability to effectively communicate project status, obstacles, and deliverables to a range of audiences
  • Willingness to navigate both management and technical challenges
  • Strong leadership skills that can engage staff, TSSC managers, and USGS customers to ensure project success

Desired Skills :

  • Broad understanding of the USGS EROS mission
  • Knowledge of science and/or project management topics
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Atlassian, Microsoft Teams, or Sharepoint
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts
