The Directed Energy Weapons Department is seeking a systems engineer with experience working on directed energy (DE) laser weapon or similar systems. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with strong written and verbal communication and proficiency in analytical skills. The individual is also a motivated self-starter, and participant in professional and community activities. The ideal candidate will be technically sound and committed to innovative, cost-effective solutions for DE laser system development. The candidate will work with other engineers to support the design, development, integration, and verification of laser systems. Duties will include: developing DE system requirements; modeling, preparation, assembly, troubleshooting, installation and checkout; and test data reduction and analysis. The candidate will be an organized, objective, balanced decision maker, who supports technical reviews; diagnoses technical issues, and implements effective solutions.

Experience requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Experience in the development, integration, test and production
  • Hands on persons, willing to work in a laboratory or field environment
  • Develop systems specifications, tolerances, and tests and have an appreciation of safety aspects and requirements of High Energy Laser systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as a part of a diverse team
  • Demonstrated experience with working in a collaborative and dynamic team environment with aggressive program schedules among multiple organizations
  • Must be able to effectively communicate
  • Ability to travel and work at government test facilities for periodic time frames
  • An active, or ability to obtain, U.S. Security Clearance.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or related field

  • Ability to research and develop advanced laser concepts, power & thermal management
  • Perform end-to-end kill chain analysis
  • Experience with control systems for beam direction and auto alignment
  • Experience with requirements development, decomposition, and tracing using requirements management tools
  • Hands on experience with design, integration & test of laser weapon systems (greater than 5kW output)
