Title:

C/C++ Software Engineer, NASA Gateway Autonomy and Flight Software

NASA is returning to the Moon. The Gateway will be an outpost orbiting the Moon that provides vital support for a sustainable, long-term human return to the lunar surface, as well as a staging point for deep space exploration. It is a critical component of NASA’s Artemis program (https://www.nasa.gov/specials/artemis/) .

The Gateway is a vital part of NASA’s deep space exploration plans, along with the Space Launch System (https://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/sls/index.html) (SLS) rocket, Orion (https://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/orion/index.html) spacecraft, and human landing system that will send astronauts to the Moon. Gaining new experiences on and around the Moon will prepare NASA to send the first humans to Mars in the coming years, and the Gateway will play a vital role in this process. It is a destination for astronaut expeditions and science investigations, as well as a port for deep space transportation such as landers en route to the lunar surface or spacecraft embarking to destinations beyond the Moon.

NASA has focused Gateway development on the initial critical elements required to support the 2024 landing – the Power and Propulsion Element, the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) and logistics capabilities.

We seek an experienced software developer to join our team to build and integrate autonomy software to operate onboard Gateway. This software will build plans, detect and manage faults, and operate Gateway while the astronauts are not present, and to help reduce their workload. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team of software developers, user interface designers and spacecraft design and operations teams. If you love space, that's even better. This role is based at Ames Research Center; but may require occasional travel to support users at other NASA centers around the United States.

Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Design, develop, and support portions of the flight software.
  • Set software goals and track progress
  • Evaluate and mitigate development risks
  • Provide on-going status to the team, management, and stakeholders

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years, or master’s degree with 1 year of significant and domain relevant programming experience.
  • Fluency with C/C++, Python, Python3
  • Demonstrated software skills developing embedded applications. Should be able to show prior work or side projects
  • Proven experience designing and developing testable software, unit and integration test harnesses, and test strategies
  • Experience with Linux, Cmake, POSIX OS.
  • Experience developing distributed systems - application servers, middleware, web servers, databases

Desirable Experience & Skills:

  • VxWorks and other RTOS's
  • Spacecraft mission operations, and the processes and software
  • Experience with core Flight System (cFS) and Core Flight Executive (CFE) or spacecraft flight software
