Decision Support Software Engineering Intern

A year-round software engineering intern position is available at NASA Ames Research Center to contribute to the development of System Health Enabled Realtime Planning Advisor (SHERPA).

SHERPA is decision support system based on the principles of decision making under uncertainty. It is being used in traverse planning for the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), planned for launch in late 2023.

Candidates must be available to contribute at least 15-20 hours per week. Candidates local to the San Francisco Bay Area are preferred, however remote participation will be considered in certain circumstances.

Undergraduate or early MS

Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident


  • Assist with SHERPA software development
  • Optimize software performance
  • Maintain code base and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with flight software standards
  • [Optional] Lead or contribute to the development of SHERPA’s web-based graphical user interface
  • [Optional] Perform project management duties: track schedule, deliverables, and requirements; coordinate execution of tasks

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Working towards Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or engineering field
  • Excellent general programming skills and fluency in at least one high-level programming language (e.g., Julia, Python, Java)
  • Extensive experience using debuggers, profilers, documentation generators, version control systems, and other common software engineering tools
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Aptitude for consistently documenting code and work

Desired Education, Experience & Skills:

  • Working towards Master ‘s Degree in computer science or engineering field
  • Fluency in Julia programming language (development will be done mostly in Julia)
  • Understanding of fundamentals of decision making under uncertainty (e.g., at the level of Stanford AA228/CS238 course)
  • Developing web-based graphical user interfaces (HTML, JavaScript)
  • Leaflet JavaScript library or similar map-handling software
  • Experience with with developing code from software requirements documents
