Software Developer for NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information

This position is for a team member supporting the NCEI Data Stewardship Division. The team member will develop, maintain, and enhance Common Data Services (CDS) applications across multiple datacenter locations in accordance with NCEI and NOAA processes and agile best practices. Work will emphasize cloud native development and cloud compatible software. This position:

  • Is suited for an experienced professional capable of working with team members and stakeholders in various geographical locations.
  • Requires attention to detail and following established processes to plan and support various projects.
  • Requires understanding of technical tools and system architecture across various platforms.
  • Requires the ability to translate and communicate project requirements to developers and operators.
  • Requires a professional degree in computer science, systems engineering, computer engineering or a similar field.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Skills at collaborating with other teams and outside partners
  • Proficiency with Java/Groovy or similar languages
  • Solid experience in the design and implementation of application stacks
  • Experience with standard application programming interfaces (APIs) and protocols such as REST
  • Experience with micro services/service-oriented application design and development
  • Familiarity with version control systems (preferably Git) in a team environment
  • Experience using Windows OS and Google G-Suite

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Grails, Gradle, and Kafka
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies
  • Proficiency with message-broker software (e.g. RabbitMQ) and its implementation
  • Experience with Jenkins automation server
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery applications (e.g. Gitlab Runner and GoCD)
  • Experience with XML and JSON
  • Experience with cloud-related technologies (AWS, serverless functions, container orchestration services, etc.)
