System Administrator/Network Administrator

KBR is seeking a mid-level or higher System Administrator with a really solid IT and networking background to support the GeneLab and SCR Biocomputational Lab at NASA Ames Research Center. The Systems Administrator will support the system life cycle and maintenance operations for Linux, Windows, and VMWare based information technology infrastructure. The candidate will be responsible for installing bioinformatics software and tools, system upgrades, will evaluate and install patches, and will resolve software or system related problems. They will also perform backup and recovery, maintain data files and monitor system configuration to ensure data integrity. The candidate will be responsible for installing and configuring new servers, desktop clients, zero clients, network devices and firewalls.

The selected candidate will act as a Subject Matter Expect and will be expected to assist with troubleshooting the most complex situations in person or over the phone with non-technical personnel.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement security fixes, operating system patches and antivirus software/definitions on multiple closed/stand-a-lone networks. Maintain up to date inventories on all hardware, software, firmware, applications, etc.
  • Configure and maintain bioinformatics data processing cluster: installing open source tools, configuring data partitions, and setting up user accounts with various access types
  • Troubleshoot systems, network, and hardware issues, identify/analyze root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Install, modify, enhance, test, and implement standard configurations for deployment of workstations, servers, and client software.
  • Support IT Security program processes, including routine reporting and audit compliance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance actions including system back-ups, error log reviews, and resource utilization.
  • Analyzes risks and/or vulnerabilities and takes corrective actions to mitigate or remove them.
  • Ensure continuing systems operability by providing ongoing optimization and problem-solving support.
  • Create and document all actions, practices, procedure, and processes. Create troubleshooting documentation and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Perform other duties and assist with special projects and installments as needed
  • Provide first-tier support for system users and provide on-call support as required.

Required Education/Experience:

The incumbent shall have a Bachelors in Computer Science, Information Technology, System Administration, or related field and 5+ years of relevant experience or Associate Degree with 9+ years of relevant experience.

Required Skills/Training:

  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and resolve server, VMware, desktop, network or other IT issues.
  • Strong Linux and Microsoft background.
  • Proficient in Remote Access tools (Dell Remote Access Controller) and configuration, various file systems (GlusterFS, XFS, NFS), cluster management tools (Xcat, LMOD)
  • Experience with Amazon Cloud Computing (AWS CLI)
  • Must possess organizational, multitasking and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have excellent team and collaborations skills.
  • Flexibility to support mission priorities.
  • Attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Highly motivated and must be able to work with minimal supervision.

Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training:

  • Experience managing high performance computing for bioinformatics processing
  • Installing, configuring, and maintaining InfiniBand switch
  • IT certification in A+, Network+, Security+ a plus Strong attention to detail
  • Additional programing and web languages (ORACLE/SQL, PERL, C++, Python, XML, PHP, R, Matlab, or other languages)
  • Active Directory management and support
  • Familiar with bioinformatics tools and workflow management tools (slurm, OpenOnDemand)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance while consistently exercising good judgment.
