Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Scientist

KBR is supporting the USGS EROS Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) Science Division by building a team of scientists to serve a new research and development study that seeks to characterize and evaluate hyperspectral imaging (HSI) capabilities with the goal of informing future Landsat operational mission architecture concepts.

There are leadership and support staff roles available on this emerging project, so this position is open to entry level and experienced science candidates.

Job Description:

The TSSC team will work cross-functionally to apply fundamental remote sensing expertise to the investigation of the utility of hyperspectral imagery across a range of science topics. Primary activities will focus on available data sets, science software development, and design of actionable use cases. Literature-based research and community interaction will acquaint Science staff with relevant data sets and current methodologies, leading to the discovery, acquisition, assessment, characterization, and documentation of existing imaging spectroscopy data sets. Science software will be developed to enable data manipulation, visualization, analysis, and generation of product derivatives. Knowledge gained will inform formulation of science use cases that will guide requirements for future product development and engineering capabilities. Output results from Science investigations will be submitted for journal publication and presentation as appropriate, as well as shared with Project partners through the Project’s Communications element.

Responsibilities :

  • Research
  • Perform literature reviews to become familiar with the state of imaging spectroscopy science and its community
  • Identify relevant data sources and determine methods of extraction
  • Assess the specifications of relevant data sets and document their characteristics
  • Analyze the performance and accuracy of relevant data sets in comparison with similar multispectral data and ground-based measurements
  • Prepare materials describing research results for presentation to USGS and Project partners
  • Development
  • Identify and implement viable algorithms for radiative transfer modeling and atmospheric compensation
  • Develop code to facilitate data manipulation, transformation, analysis, and visualization
  • Develop code to derive higher level products from base data sets as appropriate for topical assessments and for comparison with multispectral and ground-based products
  • Document algorithm descriptions to the level required to inform Engineering design concepts
  • Prepare materials describing science development results for presentation to USGS and Project partners
  • Use Cases
  • Identify and prioritize applications that support the USGS Earth remote sensing science domain
  • Perform comparative studies to determine which data sets are best suited to certain applications
  • Generate workflows describing implementation of data sets in prioritized applications
  • Document recommendations for future product specifications in the context of application utility
  • Prepare materials describing Science use cases for presentation to USGS and Project partners

Requirements :

  • Minimum 3 years residence in the U.S.
  • Understanding of fundamental imaging spectroscopy principles
  • Understanding of basic land remote sensing derivatives and applications
  • Competency with image processing software, such as but not limited to ENVI, ERDAS Imagine, ArcGIS, Adobe Geographic Imager
  • Experience with computer programming, such as but not limited to Python, C, C++, and Matlab
  • Experience in software or code analysis to understand how algorithms calculate the results under evaluation
  • Excellent problem-solving skills needed to comprehensively analyze unknowns
  • Interest in data quality assurance
  • Strong attention to organization, detail and record keeping
  • Ability to communicate regularly, professionally, and clearly at general, technical and management levels to inform team members, other EROS personnel and the land remote sensing science community
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including effective questioning, listening, and presentation skills

Desired Skills :

  • Broad understanding of the USGS EROS mission
  • Familiarity with DLR DESIS, Italian PRISMA, DLR EnMAP, NASA EMIT, NASA AVIRIS-Classic, and NASA AVIRIS-Next Generation
  • Familiarity with Spectral Sciences/U.S. AFRL MODTRAN Version 6 radiative transfer code or other pertinent atmosphere or surface radiative transfer code
  • Familiarity with imaging spectroscopy atmosphere compensation algorithm software such as ATCOR 4
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Atlassian, Microsoft Teams, or Sharepoint
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Preferred work location is USGS/EROS in Sioux Falls, SD as permitted by COVID-19 restrictions
