Job Summary

The AECOM UK&I Ground Engineering Practice is expanding due to increasing project wins and a diverse workload and has a vacancy for an early career level Engineering Geologist in Basingstoke. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate already filling this role elsewhere, or a good graduate with some experience looking to make the next move in their career.

Our Ground Engineering Practice covers all elements of Ground Engineering with a wide range of end markets including highways, rail, water and nuclear sectors.

Nationally, our Ground Engineering team comprises some 190 staff, with close integration across the team to share knowledge and provide a broad range of opportunities for staff within the UK and overseas.

We require ambitious team players with the technical skills, knowledge and experience to take day to day responsibility for delivery of projects and tasks, ensuring technical quality and adherence to budget and programme. The positions will suit those who can work with a good degree of day to day independence on tasks including desk study/feasibility through ground investigation and interpretation to final design.

Job duties

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

  • Scoping, tendering and supervision of ground investigations

  • Data interpretation, parameter derivation and design of geotechnical works including slopes, foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, strengthened earthworks, and ground improvement

  • Contribute to or lead the production of desk study, interpretive, design reports, technical notes and input to specifications and contract documentation

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary design team interfacing directly with other ground engineering team members and with other internal design teams from various disciplines and contractors

  • You will take responsibility for delivery of small projects or parts of projects under senior guidance and will assist in the internal checking and review of work by other members of the geotechnical team.

Minimum Requirements

  • You will be an engineering geologist with working knowledge and practice in site walkovers, desk studies, ground investigations, soil and rock slope stability analysis and ideally in design of foundations and retaining walls and soil and rock slope remediation works.

  • Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills working closely and collaboratively with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary environment

  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write desk studies, technical reports, specifications and contract documents

  • Good knowledge of soil and rock parameter selection

  • Analytical capabilities and experience in the use of relevant data management and design software. Experience in gINT/Holebase and in numerical modelling using UDEC/3DEC/SLIDE would be advantageous

  • Experience with relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications

  • Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK on a regular basis and to occasionally undertake short assignments overseas

  • You will have a valid UK driving license

Preferred Qualifications

  • A first degree in Geology together with an MSc in Engineering Geology or similar would be preferred.

  • Actively working towards achieving Chartered Engineer or Geologist status.
