AECOM is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to be based in Germantown, MD.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Providing detailed mechanical (HVAC and plumbing) drawings for construction. Engineer will manage multiple and concurrent projects through all phases at a project engineer level, from conceptual design, evaluate constructability, planning, detailed design, interdisciplinary coordination and construction administration, including resolving technical issues. Other functions include preparing construction documents utilizing AutoCAD, writing specifications, field survey, and meeting with UMD personal to review drawings. Provides mechanical reviews for designs developed by A&E firms as well as peer reviews for in-house projects.
Develop mechanical/plumbing scope, specifications, drawings, and cost estimates during both planning and design stages for campus projects, minor alterations and major maintenance projects in accordance with FM policies and procedures to maintain, repair, or alter existing mechanical systems, typical projects are managed by Project Manager.
Review drawings and specifications that have been developed in-house or by an outside A&E firm to ensure compliance with university and general construction standards, as well as federal and state safety regulations. Review designs for construction clarity, cost effectiveness and completeness.
Participate in Substantial completion inspections to determine compliance with drawings and specifications, proper functioning of system and review pre-function performance testing checklist on sequence of operations of mechanical system. Review submittals, change orders, and inspect installations as needed to provide construction administration support to Project Managers.
Carry out inspections/witness testing of equipment. Interface with UMD Building Controls Group, Operations and Maintenance, and Energy group on review of drawings and different phases.

Program and Project Management

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management or related field
Professional registration desirable. EIT/FE required
Knowledge on building mechanical systems
Knowledge on building HVAC and plumbing systems, including heat pumps, DX systems, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air handling and fan coil units, and constant and variable volume distribution systems, and heat exchangers. Knowledge of products and best current practices in the installation of mechanical HVAC and structural systems
Knowledge on codes such as, ASHRAE55,62.1,90.1 , IMC, IPC, NFPA
Ability to design mechanical systems and coordinate them with other building systems
Ability to use computers and be adept at using word-processing, spreadsheet and proficiency in AutoCAD
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience with building HVAC systems and with mechanical piping systems (steam, chilled/heating water, domestic water, sanitary, and storm)
Must be an effective communicator, both in oral and written form
