ManTech International is a leader in advanced technologies to help government and industry manage and protect information, support and maintain critical systems, and develop integrated solutions for mission-critical national security programs.

However, ManTech also has a small team (~25 people) of biologists, ecologists, environmental planners, and GIS professionals based out of California who work on federal contracts with various military installations across the Western region. This satellite team works with military and civilian personnel on federal landholdings to responsibly and effectively manage land and wildlife for conservation.

ManTech is seeking an entry-level Restoration and Invasive Plant Technician to support native habitat restoration projects, primarily in remote wildland settings on Vandenberg Space Force Base and Naval Base Ventura County San Nicolas Island. The Field Technician will work independently and under supervision of project leaders on a broad array of habitat restoration projects to:

  • Install and maintain irrigation systems
  • Collect native seed for propagation
  • Propagate and maintain native plants in a remote island greenhouse setting
  • Collect accurate data on smart phones with Esri Field Maps

  • Identify maintenance needs of equipment, e.g., pumps, engines, trailers, vehicles, etc.
  • Occasionally perform surveys for threatened and endangered flora and fauna

The candidate must work well with people as part of a field crew (5+) who work on chemical, mechanical and physical removal of a broad array of California invasive plant species in a variety of habitats such as coastal dune, coastal scrub, chaparral, wetland and riparian settings. Experience in plant sampling in the field and native California plant identification is desirable. Applicants must have enthusiasm for working outdoors and the ability to carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs.). Field technicians may encounter typical field hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and other nuisance species.

Restoration and Invasive Plant Technicians are based out of Lompoc, CA and work an Alternative Work Week (AWW) schedule, Monday – Thursday, 10 hour days. This is a non-exempt position that is overseen in the field by the Restoration Field Manager and Invasive Plant Field Manager but reports to the Deputy Program Manager.
