WRITER/EDITOR (PAX-21-1617-F)

Bowhead seeks an experienced Writer/Editor to support the Naval Air Station Patuxent River Tester newspaper.

Position is located on NAS Patuxent River, MD and requires 25% in office and 75% telework.

The Writer/Editor will research topics and stories, conduct interviews, write articles, take photos, and work closely with the Naval Air Station Public Affairs Officer.

Essential functions will include:
• Research topics, conduct interviews and write articles for weekly publication
• Develop feature ideas and subjects for in-depth articles to highlight positive personnel/projects around NAS Patuxent River, Navy Recreation Center Solomons and Webster Outlying Field
• Act as editor for the Tester newspaper
• Review articles submitted by other sources for accuracy, proper Associated Press and Navy style, and grammar
• Upload all content via the Blox Content Management System; determine placement of all content on available pages
• Act as photographer at multiple and varied events across the installation, including the occasional evening or weekend
• Develop relationships with experts and contacts who provide tips and leads on stories
• Develop working relationships with public affairs officers and communications specialists across the installation who contribute to Tester
• Work well with publisher’s representatives
• Meet strict weekly publication deadlines

Requirements:

• BS or BA degree in communication, journalism, or a related writing-intensive field.
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a communications professional. Reporter preferred.
• Must be able to write in accordance with Associated Press (AP) style.
• Prior experience supporting the Department of Defense or another government agency preferred.
• Ability to work with multimedia and digital development professionals; multimedia experience welcomed.
• Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office suite skills - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. Office 365 a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment, with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.


SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level, however candidates with an active Secret are encouraged to apply. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
