Overview: The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is seeking a person to fill a Crystal Growth Technician opening in the Solvothermal Laboratories located at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. The specific project involves crystal growth and characterization of actinide oxides, including ThO2, UO2, and UxTh1-xO2.
Conduct research in bulk crystal growth of actinide oxides via the Solvothermal (a.k.a hydrothermal) growth techniques. This will include operation of autoclaves, characterization of crystals, cutting and polishing of crystals, and analysis of the results. Must be knowledgeable in chemical handling and hazmat protocols, and capable of operating high pressure equipment. Experience in crystal growth and other materials synthesis is highly desirable. The focus of the research will be on understanding the crystal growth mechanisms and exploiting semiconductor properties for neutron detection applications. Promoting the research through journal publications, conference presentations, and involvement in the scientific community is required.
