Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Science Communications Lead

KBR is supporting the USGS EROS Center Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) Science Division by building a team of communications specialists, scientists, and engineers to serve a new research and development study that seeks to characterize and evaluate imaging spectroscopy (ISP) capabilities with the goal of informing future Landsat operational mission architecture concepts. A Science Communications Lead is required to centralize knowledge gained and promote project results publicly, internally, and amongst collaborators.

Job Description:

The EROS-ISP TSSC Science Communications Lead will work cross-functionally facilitating interfaces between the project and its partners. The position will integrate with the TSSC ISP Science and Engineering elements to seek and engage peers in the hyperspectral remote sensing community to cultivate collaborative relationships that will inform Project research and provide professional, technical review of experimental outputs. The Communications Lead will assist promotion of prototype products, generation of outreach materials, support for the publication process, and direction of document management as required. Interactions with internal and external partners through regularly scheduled meetings will be documented and preserved as part of the Project record and shareable with stakeholders.

Responsibilities :

  • Serve as Project Scrum Master for ready awareness of the state of all internal Project tasks and plans
  • Assist Science and Engineering elements in their work as applicable
  • Host EROS-ISP Partner Meetings by providing scheduling, agendas, minutes, and action item tracking for Project discussions, reviews, and demonstrations
  • Generate outreach materials as necessary to promote prototype product results and publications
  • Manage configuration control for any applicable documents
  • Guide Project staff through proper USGS Fundamental Science Practices as needed
  • Prepare and/or present Project results virtually or in-person at conference or other technical events when requested by USGS

Requirements :

  • Minimum 3 years residence in the U.S.
  • Project Management skills
  • Basic remote sensing science knowledge
  • Familiarity with different remote sensing products and platforms
  • Working knowledge of imaging processing software like ArcGIS, ENVI, ERDAS or QGIS
  • Strong attention to organization, detail, and record keeping
  • Ability to communicate regularly, professionally, and clearly at general, technical and management levels to inform team members, other EROS personnel and the land remote sensing science community
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including effective questioning, listening, and presentation skills

Desired Skills :

  • Broad understanding of the USGS EROS mission
  • Navigation of collaboration across different disciplines like science, engineering, and communication
  • Background working with collaboration tools such as Atlassian, Microsoft Teams, or Sharepoint
  • Ability to research scientific topics
  • Record of journal or other publications
  • Experience with data gathering and statistics
  • Proficiency in visualization tools like Tableau
  • Coding experience in languages such as Python or R
  • Familiarity with data management
  • Familiarity with Cloud processing, Cloud tools, and Cloud file formats like Cloud Optimized Geotiffs (COG)
  • Knowledge of the SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) specification
  • Experience working with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Experience in User Services
  • Competency in public outreach
  • Acquaintance with web design
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Preferred work location is USGS EROS Center in Sioux Falls, SD as permitted by COVID-19 restrictions
