The Senior Director of Strategy and Innovation for the Clinical Trials business will play a critical leadership role in the creation, growth, and strategic planning of the business. The leader will ensure the business delivers a competitive, innovative, and comprehensive portfolio of research related products to the Biopharmaceutical industry, academia and governmental agencies that optimizes use of Walgreen’s assets in this way and contributes to the business results and strategic plan of the organization. The leader will identify market opportunities, define strategic cross functional visions and goals, align with other Walgreens business segments to ensure the Clinical Trials business executes against key success metrics, including financial targets. This role will focus on the internal strategy and innovation of the Walgreens RWE Clinical Trials business as well as potential partners to enable its growth, this role will not focus on selling or working directly with biopharmaceutical partners to contract for research services. Rather, this individual will conduct landscape reviews of the clinical trial industry to inform strategic direction. This role will report directly to the Chief Clinical Trials Officer.
Drive leadership in the strategic project planning, designing, and implementing of innovative business solutions by defining vision, strategies, and tactics to address markets shifts in order to optimize the Clinical Trials business’s competitive position. Creates materials for Corporate, Board of Directors and cross-functional business presentations, and cascades strategy plans across the organization to drive alignment and execution.
Lead annual 3-year Corporate long range planning efforts. Partner with Clinical Trials leadership team, financial planning organization, cross-functional business leads, legal, compliance, quality and corporate strategy teams to develop and prioritize new organizational strategic goals and refine/expand/close existing strategies to meet business and financial targets
Ensure investments, organizational structure, labor, finance, internal procedures and partnerships and major initiatives incorporate broader strategic considerations and are optimized for business success
Draft in partnership with internal team considering external landscape and partnership plans and strategies to enable business to support research products. These products may include real world evidence, health economics and outcomes research, patient recruiting, patient retention, and clinical trial conduct (in person, in home, virtual, etc). These may include plans and strategies for quality and training infrastructure, PI relationships, IP and pharmacy strategies, diversity and inclusion goals, geographic foot-print, digital documentation, labs, diagnostic devices and source capture, etc. as required by business growth and development.
Identify potential M&A targets to support the business growth in the marketplace. Partner with Walgreens M&A team and Chief Clinical Trials Officer to build the business case and work to secure alignment at the corporate level. and partner with the Walgreens M&A team to support the business growth in the marketplace. Supports business case and investment decisions for specific with Finance teams.
Lead external partnerships, licensing and white-labeling as appropriate to acquire further capabilities and enable product development to satisfy and excite biopharmaceutical partners.
Support internal communications regarding project, strategy and progress as well as external communication, as needed.
Hire, train and develop (as needed) additional colleagues to scale business and further develop strategy and internal capabilities.
Lead Clinical Trials business quarterly SWOT analysis and assessment of the capabilities for application against the business and market needs of our primary customers (Biopharmaceutical Industry) and work with the Clinical Trials business leaders to identify products and solutions to bring to the business
Partners with the Chief Clinical Trials Officer to define organizational structure to align with the current external market insights and industry focus for clinical trials design and delivery.

Bachelor’s Degree and at least 8 years of strategy & Innovation in healthcare/life sciences experience OR High School/GED and at least 11 years of strategy & Innovation in healthcare/life sciences experience.
Experience working in a highly matrixed environment as well as building cross-functional relationships and leading with a general manager mentality.
Ability to take ownership and operate as a hands-on leader who can proactively plan and deliver tangible results for Walgreens as well as partners.
Proven success in fast-paced, startup-like environments requiring collaboration with multiple internal teams and external consultants to drive business impact. Entrepreneurial mindset with desire to grow a nascent business.
Ability to communicate highly complex information with ease to internal and external partners, as well as presenting insights and recommendations to executive leaders.
Leads by example and exhibits a superior level of emotional intelligence by practicing empathy, managing relationships and resolving conflict.
At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
Advanced degree, preferably MBA, Masters in Business or Science
Deep knowledge of Clinical Trials business and biopharmaceutical industry.
Experience building B2B partnerships with high-profile companies.
Client-facing experience for business development or consulting purposes.
