Overview:

Provides direct care to patients through diagnoses and treats human responses to actual or potential health problems. Provides care supportive to or restorative to life and well-being. Assists Head Nurse in coordination, develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care and practice within a specific Unit in the Center. Maintains standards of nursing care and practice by directing and guiding Unit personnel. Assists with staff development and continuing education programs. Assumes total responsibility of the Unit in the absence of Head Nurse.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Head Nurse in directing, administering, and assigning clinical patient care activities of professional nursing and ancillary nursing personnel on Unit.
  • Interpret Hospital and nursing procedures and policies to personnel.
  • Assist with a review of performance of nursing personnel.
  • Assist with group learning opportunities and orientation to add knowledge utilized in providing coordinated nursing care.
  • Assist with continued learning experiences for nursing personnel based on individual needs in cooperation with the Head Nurse, Clinical Supervisor, and Instructor.
  • Serve as a resource person for the nursing staff within her Unit or other Units where her nursing expertise may be called on.
  • Provide consultations for members of his/her staff and immediately resolves problems that may arise.
  • Coordinate, implements, and teaches knowledge and skill to Unit personnel and private duty nurses.
  • Review and analyzes trends pertinent to nursing care and initiates appropriate nursing care practices.
  • Cooperate with other disciplines that are involved with patient care.
  • Assure maintenance of current nursing care plans.
  • Assist with plans for adequate coverage for Unit and cooperates with Head Nurse and Staffing Nurse Coordinator in order to utilize staff properly to meet patient needs and employee satisfaction.
  • Participate with other staff members and plans for patients discharges in advance and makes appropriate referrals so that other agencies can adequately attend to patient/family needs.
  • Greet visitors and assists them with understanding how to contribute to the health needs of the patients/families both in the Hospital and after discharge.
  • Coordinates with appropriate personnel to assure that there are adequate supplies and equipment on the Unit and reorders from appropriate sources according to procedure.
  • Maintains narcotics and barbiturate controls according to Hospital policy.
  • Performs other duties as requested.


Qualifications:

Education:

  • BA/BS in Nursing or equivalent from accredited nursing program.

Experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years as a Registered Nurse plus demonstrated competence and progressive leadership experience in Nursing.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Responsible for acquiring knowledge and skill of current professional and community needs via attendance to college programs, workshops, seminars and/or conferences.
  • Ability to fully utilize BHMCs electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in New York State.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to position and partially lift patients is required.
