The Role

The Systems Safety Engineer reports to the Systems Safety Manager on all aspects of Systems Safety. The Systems Safety Engineer has technical experience in utilizing systems safety standards like IL-STD-882 or similar safety engineering standards used in industry. Under supervision, the Systems Safety Engineer is primarily responsible for review and development of safety case deliverables and managing the systems safety case, attendance at all systems safety working groups and maintaining decision records and registers relating to systems safety. Performing work tasks in accordance with planned schedule of Engineering changes, the Systems Safety Engineer provides advice and communicates all aspects of systems safety with the broader stakeholder engaged in sustainment of maritime assets HMA Ship’s Canberra, Adelaide, Choules and amphibious landing craft and shore support facilities.

To be successful in this role, you will be able to:

  • From systems safety engineering perspective, perform reviews of design tasking statements, design requirements and design deliverables in accordance with the planned schedule under supervision of a Systems Safety Manager.
  • Review and develop system safety cases and safety assessments for new and existing capability under engineering change proposals and configuration changes.
  • Familiarity with systems safety standards and communication, can clearly articulate aspects of safety advice, issues and concerns to personnel of varying experience and professions within the organisation.
  • Participate in working groups related to system reviews, systems safety reviews addressing Materiel System and/or Support System subject to safety analysis, design, development and implementation.
  • Review the certification of the Materiel and/or Support System in accordance with the applicable Defence technical and seaworthiness regulatory framework.
  • Develop, guides and reviews systems safety cases, analysis and assessments.
  • Participate in Integrated Product Teams (IPT) as appropriate.
  • Foster development safe work environment and practices.
  • Contribute to development of System Safety Plans, Procedures and Processes.

Required Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Current NV1 (mandatory)
  • Australian Citizenship (mandatory)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field in Mechanical/Electrical/Systems.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a similar position.
  • Eligible to obtain a Suitably Qualified Experience Personnel (SQEP) delegation within an Authorised Engineering Organisation (AEO).
  • Eligible for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) clearance on relevant ship systems.
  • Systems safety engineering experience in Defence sectors.
  • Technical experience in system safety standards (i.e. MIL-STD-882 or similar safety engineering standards).
  • Strong client and staff engagement, relationship and communications skills.
  • Strong organisational, coordination skills and analytical skills.
