Description for Internal Candidates

Powell's Electrical Division is currently hiring an Electrical Engineer to join the team! We are located in Jacintoport- Houston, TX and are hiring immediately! To develop custom engineered solutions using non-standard applications of Powell standard products to safely and economically meet customer specifications.

Posted position does not provide visa sponsorship or relocation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design basic projects with guidance.
  • Read and interpret customer project specifications.
  • Order materials.
  • Create and transmit project drawings to manufacturing and customer.
  • Interface with sales, purchasing, customer (with assistance), shop, and service technicians.
  • Completed tasks are checked by more senior engineers.
  • Direct designers in completing wiring diagrams.
  • Available to answer technical questions from designers and engineers.
  • Create project related drawings and documents for manufacturing and customer.
  • Create documentation to support field service when required.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues with equipment from production to installation with guidance.
  • Learn policies and procedures, work instruction, Safety Rules and Regulations, and vendor products.
  • Attend in house and outside training sessions.
  • Attend local professional associations.
  • Become proficient with 2+ Powell product offerings. Current and legacy.
  • Check completed tasks of other designers or engineers.
  • Create proposal drawings in support of sales and estimating.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Provide technical assistance to sales, manufacturing, engineering, inspection, and field service on project issues.


Requirements

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or related area.
  • 2-5 years of experience in an Engineering role.
  • Familiarity with 2+ non-Powell product lines.
  • Intermediate understanding of electrical design and circuitry.
  • Intermediate understanding of power system and relay applications as applied to products.
  • General knowledge of Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) Switchgear, Motor Control Center (MCC), and other related Power Distribution Equipment.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and written.
  • Able to interact on a regular basis with manufacturing and shop personnel.
  • Able to interact on a regular basis with service technicians.
  • Able to apply product knowledge and technical skills to solve intermediate application problems independently with minimum supervision.
  • Intermediate drafting/CAD skills.
  • Able to read, interpret, and modify; electrical symbols, characters, and drawings.
  • Able to apply industry codes and standards (ANSI, NEC, etc.) as applicable to his/her assigned projects.
  • Innovative to adapt existing Powell products and processes to non-standard applications based on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Innovative to improve existing products and processes.
  • Able to travel to customer sites for project specific requirements.
  • Basic understanding of initial project reviews (i.e., acquired knowledge of specs that Powell should take exception to and specs that require special attention; able to accurately interpret customer specs, etc.).


Working & Environmental Conditions

  • The employee typically performs duties in a normal office environment. There will be some work in a shop environment and exposure to the elements of our shop. Additionally there may be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
