The Steam Plant Operator is part of our Building Technologies & Solutions business at Johnson Controls. Due to our continued growth with our current customer at the University of North Dakota, we are adding this position to our team. This person will be located at the University of North Dakota campus, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Come join our growing team!

What you will do

Under specific direction, this position assists in the production of, and maintaining of a uniform flow of steam by operating high-pressure boilers and maintaining all equipment in the boiler room.

How you will do it

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of a high pressure gas/oil fired boiler plant along with all associated equipment on a 24/7 based schedule to including weekends and holidays.
  • Control and adjust boiler fuel air mixture, pump pressure, tank levels, and other boiler plant related systems and equipment via automated control systems to ensure good-safe operation while maximizing boiler efficiency.
  • Assist maintenance staff with cleaning, repair and maintenance of boilers and associated equipment. Includes fireside cleaning, waterside cleaning, and boiler tube cleaning along with other maintenance duties assigned.
  • Make entries into a daily shift log.
  • Updating fuel usage and maintenance reports.
  • Use of computer for maintenance records and data entry.
  • Subject to call back to maintain shift coverage and overall plant operation.
  • Selects and lays out required materials per work orders or verbal instructions.
  • Sets up and operates tools and machines incidental to operations.
  • May be required to assist with requisitioning new supplies and equipment.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures and adhere to company standards.
  • Perform other duties as required.

What we look for

Required

  • Completion of a two-year technical degree or equivalent, or a minimum of two years’ experience in the Maintenance and Operation field.
  • Requires knowledge of trade fundamentals sufficient to perform specialized service and repair work.
  • Requires ability to work in a team-oriented atmosphere while being able to follow verbal and written instruction.
  • Must be physically able to perform basic maintenance tasks to the highest caliber, which includes ability to: climb ladders, work in confined spaces, lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 Ibs., etc.
  • Must be able to work varying shifts, weekends and holidays as needed, subject to callbacks seven day a week, 24 hours a day. The regular shift will alternate every four weeks, from Monday – Thursday, 6 am – 4 pm, and Friday – Monday, 6 am – 4 pm.
  • Required to use a variety of hand and power tools or forklift.
  • May be required to possess a valid driver's license.
