Leidos Health Solutions is currently looking for a Research Associate with molecular biology experience to support the Directed Energy (DE) department at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX.  NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operation.

Main Objective:

  • Plans work with power and frequency meters, oscillators, directional couplers, radiofrequency (RF) power density monitors, RF transmission lines, primary power distribution hardware, and RF transmitters in accordance with safety requirements

  • Executes complex laboratory tests of systems and independently executes a redesign and modification of in-service systems to meet experimental requirements.  This requires electronics knowledge in several areas including circuit design, power handling capabi1ity, and microwave theory and techniques

  • Measures energy absorbed by animals and animal models from nonionizing radiation fields.  This requires knowledge of specific absorption rate measurement including whole body and partial-body calorimetry

  • Develops and updates day-to-day calibration and maintenance of microwave emitter systems

  • Determines requirements from approved animal experimental protocol and schedules exposures of appropriate RF field power density, pulse duration, and pulse repetition rate

  • Designs and produces experimental methods and unique complex laboratory equipment and systems in the absence of formal guidelines to collect data for a wide variety of laboratory experiments.  Such experiments often deal with artificial human or animal models (phantoms) or live subjects

  • Assists technical personnel associated with research projects and manages data

  • Assists in research design and development of standard operating procedures according to laboratory safety requirements.

  • Calibrates, sets up, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatuses in accordance with protocols

  • Assists in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies for research under contract

  • Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research, structured interviews; or through other means for research projects

  • Compiles and may analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques

  • Writes and edits material for publication and presentation.

  • Reports on status of research activities

  • Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products.

  • Prepares and aids in training of experimental subjects for experimental procedures in accordance with approved animal or human use protocols

  • Resolves design problems and special requirements for equipment compatibility with nonionizing radiation environments

  • Plans the timing and availability sequence of major directed energy systems that are consistent with project milestones

What Set You Apart:

  • Bachelor’s degree with three years of experience, or Master’s degree or equivalent. Degree should be in a related field

  • Experience supporting research team in a laboratory environment

  • Experience with military electronic equipment

  • Knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology

  • Comfortable working with and handling animals

  • Ability to make and record detailed observations and troubleshoot technical procedures

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that may include occasional evening or weekend shifts

  • Experience as an electronics/biomedical technician is a plus

  • Possess or be able to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level.  Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level

  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required

Pay Range:

Pay Range $53,950.00 - $97,525.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
