Provides wide range of physical therapy services to patients. Under the supervision of the staff physical therapist, the physical therapy assistant works independently and in consultation of referring physicians with guidance of the supervisory personnel, organizing treatments to meet established criteria and proper documentation in patients' medical records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Associate degree in Physical Therapy Assistant.

2. Current or temporary licensure in the state of West Virginia, or applicable state where services will be performed. Permanent licensure obtained within 90 days of hire.

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

1. One year of acute hospital experience preferred

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Physical therapist assistants will apply research and proven techniques to prevent or treat conditions that limit the body's ability to move and function in daily life by implementing the plan of care established by a physical therapist.

2. Determines/ revises priorities for direct/ indirect patient care activities based on patient need and available resources; collaborates with nursing to update appropriate algorithms for safe patient handling.

3. Documents all treatments, according to department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision of the patient's primary physical therapist.

4. Participates in the Performance Improvement program of the Rehabilitation Services department with emphasis on physical therapy, to assure the delivery of appropriate, timely, and cost-effective services.

5. Participates in education and training of West Virginia University Staff, students, patients, and family members to assure the appropriate delivery of care and to achieve the WVU Hospitals mission.

6. Submits accurate charges of services rendered for patients, according to departmental policies and procedures utilizing the billing system via the patient's EMR.

7. Maintains professional competence and proficiency to assure services consistent with national and professional standards of care.

8. Maintains proper attendance and punctuality to ensure that the hospital is operated in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

9. Participates in meeting the goals and objectives of the work unit and department to ensure that the department contributes to the attainment of the hospital's goals and objectives.

10. Carries out oversight responsibilities to ensure supervision of students and volunteers.

1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and re-positioning will be completed utilizing the lift equipment and/or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patient's profile and appropriate algorithms.

2. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.

3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
