What you will do:

Johnson Controls is developing the next generation of residential HVAC systems.  With the increased emphasis on decarbonization, the need for new and advanced residential systems is imperative for the next generation of products.  Johnson Controls is committed to delivering and leading in this fast-paced evolving marketplace, where we make buildings smarter, more comfortable, more efficient, and, ultimately, more sustainable.

As a Mechanical Senior Staff Engineer, you will be a member of our New Product Introduction (NPI) development team. In this role, you will influence the conceptual development, mathematical analysis, detailed design, and overall performance of sophisticated products and systems, including the building of and validation of advanced design concepts.  You will have highly focused activities on product performance and agency related elements of the programs. As a recognized technical specialist this role will influence the organization and industry in Trade organization and agency work and provide support to the production, laboratory, service, applications, and marketing teams.

How you will do it:

  • Lead other engineers in the development of NPI programs and agency-centric activities, including Safety Agency liaison and certification, split system expanded technical documentation, and system ratings, AHRI support activities such as participation in and influencing of AHRI committees and AHRI certification programs. 

  • Uses standard and sophisticated technical and mathematical principles, theories, concepts, techniques, processes, and standard methodologies in the field.

  • Continuously researches equipment operation, materials, industrial processes, and manufacturing equipment.

  • Investigates and analyzes product design requirements and recommends optimum solutions.

  • Proficient in mechanical design and able to conceptualize and implement design ideas into the product.

  • Utilizes mechanical engineering theory and methodologies such as heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and failure analysis.

  • Develop mathematical calculations and formulas using multiple variables and analyze results.

  • Establishes prototype & test criteria, participates in laboratory testing, and analyzes test data to identify effective product designs that exceed performance, quality, and cost requirements.

  • Responsible for the on-time completion of projects.

  • Generates user documentation.

  • Continuously increases expertise in all aspects of product design, theory, construction, operation, and applications.

  • Learns and applies regulatory codes such as UL, CSA, ARHI, ASME, CE, and PED.

  • Mentors and leads newer engineers in engineering sciences applied, and project management and execution.

  • Strives for continuous improvement and teamwork in a global product development and process environment.

What we look for:

Required

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited), Master’s degree preferred. 

  • Minimum 10 years of applicable experience

  • Released multiple product families, serving as lead engineer one multiple occasions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and independent decision-making ability.

  • Ability to positively influence the organization on a global level.

  • Experience mentoring and leading other engineers.

About the Manager:

I’ve been working in the Residential/light commercial HVAC product engineering industry for 30+ years. My experience includes work in water source heat pumps, residential AC/ heat pumps, coils, and air handlers. My interests revolve around developing high quality, cost competitive, strong performing residential HVAC systems. Our work and designs make possible societal economic growth and advancement of society, by providing comfortable, and healthy environment where we work, live, and play. Expect to be challenged in this role to learn new tools and systems, tackle complicated projects, make engineering judgements in the face of uncertainty, and conduct exploratory analysis to evaluate system performance. As a leader, I am focused on continuous learning and development – both building our own engineering skillsets, but also improving our processes and products.
