Description:
The Advanced Electro-Optical and Mission Systems (AEO&MS) Department is seeking a senior level systems engineer with experience working on directed energy (DE) and/or laser weapon systems. The system engineer will be a technically sound engineer, committed to innovative, cost-effective solutions for DE and laser system applications. The candidate will work with other senior engineers and architects to enhance their skill sets by providing hands-on engineering support for design, development, integration, and verification of laser systems. Duties include develop/manage the laser system requirements; verification planning and coordination; assembly, preparation, and maintenance; troubleshooting; installation & checkout; software integration; IV&V; test data reduction and analysis. The candidate is an organized, objective, balanced decision maker, who supports technical reviews; guides engineering; coordinates designs; leads day-to-day operations; and represents engineering for the laser system on the program. The candidate ensures quality engineering work products, and collaborates with experts in various disciplines (e.g. manufacturing, supply chain, quality, specialty engineering, etc.) in the integration, test, and evaluation of DE & laser systems.

The individual is passionate about practical and effective application of Systems Engineering to laser system products, and technologies. The role encompasses support of architectural development of DE and laser systems from an IV&V standpoint, development of T&E strategies and plans leveraging modeling, analyses, simulations, and tests, at levels from qualification to acceptance. The candidate possesses career experience and technical acumen in physical architecture product technologies associated with laser capabilities. Areas of expertise include laser designs, output couplers, continuous/pulsed operation, coatings, beam shaping, adaptive optics, pointing control, gain media, free space/fiber/wave-guided systems, 3 & 4 level systems, single/multi-mode systems, mode locking, ultrafast systems, beam control, HW/SW development and integration of laser systems.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 10 years of systems engineering experience with at least 6 yrs experience on DE/laser systems
  • Experience with design, Assembly, Integration & Test of laser systems/subsystems
  • Knowledge of High Energy Systems operation both CW and pulsed
  • Industry knowledge of existing systems and research areas
  • Develop specifications, tolerances, and tests for laser systems and have an appreciation of safety aspects and requirements of High Energy Laser systems
  • Ability to travel and work at government test facilities for periodic time frames
  • First order knowledge of structural thermal optical performance of laser systems
  • Design of lasers systems and subsystems
  • Understanding of geometric optics
  • Pumping techniques, resonators, and cavity shapes
  • Mode locking, cavity dumping, seeding techniques, and Master Oscillators
  • Working knowledge of contamination, cleaning processes, and impacts in laser systems
  • Metrology and common test equipment for laser alignment
  • Skilled with interferometers, wavefront sensors, and near-field, far-field and thermal imaging techniques
  • Ability to independently set up and perform system tests
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

  • 8 years of experience developing and building laser weapon systems
  • Development of verification campaigns for laser systems, employing test verticality
  • Ability to research and develop advanced laser concepts

  • Proficiency modeling, analyzing, and simulating laser system function and performance
  • Free space propagation of light in atmosphere, turbulent media
  • Combining using Spectral, Spatial or Coherent techniques
  • Spectral/spatial hole burning, and chirping (saturation effects)
  • Control systems for beam direction and auto alignment
  • Jitter correction and dynamics of laser systems
  • Industry knowledge of laser optic coatings and performance, including LIDT
  • Hands on experience with design, integration & test of laser weapon systems (greater than 5kW output)
  • Laser safety in accordance with MIL-STD-882, ANSI Z136.1 or similar
  • LADAR/LIDAR system operation
  • Familiarity with interfacing of diagnostics to manual and automated data acquisition systems (i.e., LabVIEW or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of laser communication theory
  • Industry experience with optics, coatings, and fiber related components
  • Knowledgeable in specialty engineering contamination control, reliability, radiation, EMI/EMC, PMP, safety and –ilities
  • Top Secret/SSBI

Required Education: BS/MS with emphasis on optics, optical engineering, or lasers, applied physics, electrical engineering with opto-electronics concentration, systems engineering, or applied mathematics
