Job Summary
The Grocery Manager shall ensure compliance with the guidance set forth in the contract to operate a grocery store in a military facility. Management oversight includes shelf stocking, receiving, personnel training, shelf space management, merchandising, reordering, monitoring vendor stockers, vendor operated bakeries, shelf label management, processing damaged merchandise, spot checks on the accuracy of shelf prices, and other associated functions.
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)
  • Effectively and efficiently manage and apply inventory control.
  • Develop and provide plans for grocery services operations to include operational hours, store inventory, layout and management plan.
  • Answer customer questions, handle customer complaints in a cordial manner, implement customer suggestions on how to render better service in the stores and departments.
  • Maintain access control to the stores to ensure sales are limited to authorized customers per military facility policies.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage ordering of merchandise and products.
  • Create effective work schedules for staff to ensure continuity of services, operations and store hygiene.
  • Reconcile product invoices against product receiving reports.
  • Create discrepancy reports when the merchandise/product invoices do not match receiving reports.
  • Study sales trends, authorize clearance sales and determine sales promotions.
  • Effectively manage and utilize applicable ordering and receiving business Ssystems
  • Manage and account for stock management operations.
  • Develop and implement safety program for retail grocery store services per OSHA and NFPA standards.
  • Conduct packaging, labeling and pricing for merchandise products.
  • Monitor and ensure safe and edible merchandise products for retail grocery operations and services.
  • Manage and utilize first-in/first-out method for merchandise rotation and inventory control.
  • Manage wholesale and retail bakery services for cafeteria and food service operations.
  • Develop and provide plans for bakery operations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and food sanitization regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of operating and managing a retail grocery store and bakery.
  • Basic understanding of  FIFOFE (First In First Out, First to Expire), TMD (Temperature Measuring Device) records, warehouse safety, ground guiding.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to interact effectively with customers and other personnel.
  • Knowledge of food service and sanitation standards in a contingency environment.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.

Experience & Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree form a four year accredited college or university preferred
  • Three (3) years’ experience in grocery department operations

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Position will be assigned to overseas locations where living and working conditions at assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable, with long hours, exposure to weather, dust, and hazardous/harsh conditions. Occasional stateside travel.
