Revise Your Facebook Profile Before Your Job Search

I love a good party on the weekend.  Work hard, play hard, right?  I love sharing pics of my friends and I having fun and being stupid, but you know what I don’t do?  I don’t post those pictures on my public Facebook page.  If you’re looking for a new job, clean up your public Facebook persona first!

 You’re hard at work trying to get a new job. Revising your resume, searching job openings, networking everywhere you go, making sure you have a suit that fits, but if your Facebook page is open for the entire world to see, all that hard work may be for nothing!

You and your friends throw language around on Facebook that you’d never dream of using at work. You can keep doing that, but lock it down.  If you would be embarrassed to have your grandma see what you’ve written or that picture that was posted of you, you certainly don’t want prospective employers to see it. When, not if, the company you’ve applied for looks at your FB page and sees things they feel are inappropriate, they’re not going to call you for an interview.

People want to argue with me and tell me that it’s not fair and that that’s the “REAL THEM.” Agree or disagree, this is what is happening in the world of the job search today and by leaving those kind of things open on your Facebook page, you’re hindering your job search.
