Female Veterans Transitioning to Civilian Life

Transitioning from military service into a civilian career can present unique challenges, especially for women veterans. We connected with Bobbi Young of Inspired Growth Portal to talk about making the move to civilian life.

Video Transcript:

Andrew: Hi, I’m Andrew with Military Hire, and this month, we are highlighting women veterans. We recently sat down with Bobbi Young, who currently works with the DoD, and is also the web guru at Vets 2 Industry. On top of that, she also has an entrepreneurial endeavor to help fellow veterans bring their businesses’ websites to life with an organization called Inspired Growth Portal. So, Bobbi, who are you and what do you do?

Bobbi: My name is Bobbi Young, and I am currently a programmer with the U.S. Government, and I’m also CEO of Inspired Growth Portal, where I help veteran entrepreneurs with building their businesses online.

Andrew: How did your experience in the military influence your skill sets in your career?

Bobbi: So in the military, my skill sets was signal analysis and radar analysis. I had to look at a bunch of numbers, I had to make an assessment and I had to either submit it to somebody else for review or I had to present it in front of individuals, as a group or one-on-one. One of my other skill sets in the military was I was an instructor. I taught Self Aid Buddy Care, which was a ton of fun, and also helpful for other folks. And lastly, I was an NCO (non-commissioned officer), and I would be NCOIC (Non-commissioned Officer in Charge) of my ops floor, so I would be in charge of about 17 people for their day-to-day activities.

Now, all of those skills, I felt were very helpful when it came to me getting out of the military and to my current careers as of right now. So while I’m not doing signal analysis and I’m not working with radars anymore, instead, I’m still working with data, I’m still working with building information and ensuring that it is understandable by the people that I am presenting it to, and people who are going to be using the products that I’m building.

It’s also extremely helpful with my side job, Inspired Growth Portal, because as an instructor, I have to make sure that the people who I’m teaching understand what I’m saying, so while yes, I am building them a website and I’m building them a platform to sell their business online, I’m also teaching them at the end, on how to run it themselves, so that way they are not dependent on somebody else to do those little changes.
